About Duetact

What is Duetact?

Duetact contains two diabetes medicines: glimepiride and pioglitazone. Glimepiride causes the body to release insulin, and pioglitazone helps the body process insulin, which lowers blood sugar levels. This reduces the risk of serious diabetes complications, including nerve problems, blindness, and kidney damage.

How do I take Duetact?

Use Duetact alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise to ensure that it is as effective as possible. Follow your doctor’s dosage instructions carefully; most people who use this medication take it once a day with their morning meal. Check your blood sugar regularly, and keep all appointments with your doctor while using this drug. You may need to have periodic blood tests.

What if I forget to take a dose of Duetact?

Take the missed dose with food as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one. Do not take more medicine than you normally would in a single dose.

What happens if I overdose on Duetact?

Overdosing on Duetact may lead to a fast heart rate, sweating, shaking, or loss of consciousness. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 if you believe that you or someone in your household has overdosed, and seek emergency medical attention if the person who overdosed is experiencing adverse effects.

Before taking Duetact, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to glimepiride, pioglitazone, or any other medications

  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements

  • You have severe heart failure or heart disease

  • You have had a heart attack or stroke

  • You are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis (your body is producing excess blood acids)

  • You have kidney or liver disease

  • You have eye problems related to diabetes

  • You have a personal or family history of bladder cancer

  • You have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (a genetic enzyme deficiency)

  • You have fluid retention or fluid in your lungs

  • You have thyroid or other hormone problems

  • You have anemia or a mineral imbalance

  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Duetact?

Side effects of Duetact may include nausea, headache, dizziness, diarrhea, cold-like symptoms, or muscle pain. If you have any side effects that last a long time or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Stop taking the Duetact drug and call your doctor immediately if you experience severe side effects such as sudden weight gain, shortness of breath, changes in amount or color of urine, painful urination, unusual bruising or bleeding, unusual vision changes, sharp pain in your hands or feet, clay-colored stool, jaundice, upper stomach pain, skin rash, or signs of an infection.

How do I store Duetact?

Store Duetact at room temperature, out of reach of children and pets. Do not keep this medication in the bathroom, since moisture and bright light can negatively affect it. If you no longer need Duetact and are unsure how to safely dispose of it, talk to your pharmacist.

Warnings

Duetact can cause low blood sugar, so make sure you always carry a quick source of sugar, such as hard candy or fruit. Make sure you can recognize the signs of high and low blood sugar, and let your doctor know if you have been noticing blood sugar fluctuations. Your doctor may need to adjust your dose. Don’t drink alcohol while taking Duetact, since alcohol can cause your blood sugar to drop dangerously low. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when you are outside, since Duetact can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

Brand Names

Duetact is a brand name drug. There is also a generic form of pioglitazone/glimepiride that is available in most pharmacies. The generic form is less expensive, so talk to your doctor to see if it’s possible to switch. If not, remember to get a Duetact coupon so that you can save up to 75% every time you fill your prescription.
