About Suprax

What is Suprax?

Suprax is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that is prescribed to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including those of the eyes, ears, throat, lungs, and urinary tract. It is also used to treat gonorrhea, bronchitis, and pneumonia; it will not work on illnesses caused by viruses.

How do I take Suprax?

To reduce the Suprax cost without a copay card, download and use our Suprax coupon before you fill your prescription. The Suprax medicine comes as either a tablet or a liquid, both of which are taken orally, once or twice a day (depending on the condition being treated) for five to fourteen days. The tablet is swallowed whole with a glass of water; the oral suspension must be well-shaken before administering it using a metered spoon or cup. If Suprax causes an upset stomach, it can be taken with food or milk.

What if I forget to take a dose of Suprax?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Suprax, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one, and resume the normal pattern. Do not take multiple doses to compensate for the one missed.

What happens if I overdose on Suprax?

If an overdose of Suprax is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. However, if the individual has stopped breathing or lapsed into unconsciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Before taking Suprax, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to cefixime, cephalosporin, or any ingredients in the Suprax tablet or liquid

  • You are allergic to antibiotics or other medications

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or nursing a child

  • You are taking antibiotics

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You are taking anticoagulants, carbamazepine, aspirin, or probenecid

  • You have stomach problems, heart, kidney, or liver disease, or colitis

What are the possible side effects of taking Suprax?

Some patients have reported side effects after taking the Suprax medicine. Less severe side effects include an upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, or mild rash. However, if any of these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include vaginal infection, itching, rash, hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, mouth, throat, lips, or tongue.

How do I store Suprax?

Keep Suprax tightly sealed in its original container and out of the reach of children. Store the tablets in a location that is safe from the extremes of humidity and temperature. The oral suspension must be refrigerated; do not allow it to freeze. Discard any unused or expired tablets or solution according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

Warnings

Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Some people may be allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Suprax. If you have diabetes, do not use Clinitest to test urine for blood sugar levels while taking this medication; ask your doctor to recommend an alternate product.
