About Seroquel Xr

What is Seroquel XR?

Seroquel XR (quetiapine extended release) is an atypical antipsychotic and a dopamine, serotonin, and adrenergic antagonist that affects these neurochemicals to treat symptoms of schizophrenia as well as manic or depressive episodes associated to bipolar disorder.

How do I take Seroquel XR?

Always take this medication exactly as instructed and do not take more than prescribed or for longer than prescribed. Your dose is determined by your age, weight, and what is being treated.

Most often you will take 1 pill with a full glass of water (8 oz) or a small meal (300 kcal) every day. Take your pill at the same time every day for best effectiveness. Never crush, break, or chew your Seroquel XR dose.

What if I forget to take a dose of Seroquel XR?

Never take extra medication to make up for a missed dose, so if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Otherwise you may take the missed dose as soon as you remember it.

What happens if I overdose on Seroquel XR?

An overdose of Seroquel XR can be fatal. If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical assistance immediately. Symptoms may include unusual dizziness, fainting, or fast heartbeat.

Before taking Seroquel XR, tell your doctor if:

• You are pregnant or nursing or plan to become pregnant or to nurse. • You are taking any other medications, over-the-counter drugs, or supplements, including any that cause drowsiness (e.g., muscle relaxer, sleeping pill, pain medicine), dyes used for certain scans, and cancer medications. • You have dementia. • You have or have a history of kidney or liver disease or disorder. • You have or have a history of heart-related disease or disorder, including stroke, heart rhythm problems, blood pressure or cholesterol problems. • You have epilepsy or other disorders with seizures. • You have or have a history of diabetes or thyroid disorder. • You have or have a history of low WBC. • You have or have a history of swallowing difficulties or problems.

What are the possible side effects of taking Seroquel XR?

Always inform your doctor if you have new or worsening symptoms, including aggression or hostility, impulsive behavior, mental or physical restlessness or hyperactivity, panic attacks, or suicidal ideation.

Some Seroquel XR side effects may be severe and require immediate emergency medical assistance, including: allergic reaction (hives, swelling in the face, lips, tongue, throat), rigid muscles, tremors or other uncontrolled movements, mask-like expression, confusion, high fever with sweating, feeling as though you may faint, fast or uneven heart beats, speech or vision problems, tunnel vision, visual halos, swollen or reddened gums, painful mouth sores, trouble breathing or swallowing, skin sores, impotence or loss of libido.

More common side effects include: loss of energy or feeling tired or drowsy, mild dizziness, dry mouth, increased appetite and weight gain, stomach discomfort or pain, nausea and vomiting, constipation.

How do I store Seroquel XR?

Store this medication tightly sealed at room temperature and away from excess heat or moisture (e.g., a bathroom).

Warnings

This medication is not intended to be used with elderly patients that have dementia. Seroquel XR can cause, in rare incidences, suicidal ideations in teens and young adults who also have depression. Family members and caregivers should be aware of this risk and watch for associated behaviors. High doses or long term use of Seroquel XR can cause a movement disorder that may be irreversible. Do not drink alcohol while taking Seroquel XR, as it increases the risk of or may exacerbate certain side effects.

You may be more sensitive to heat stroke while taking this medication, so be sure to stay hydrated, especially in hot weather or during exercise. Always get sit up or stand up slowly, as Seroquel XR may cause you to become temporarily dizzy and to fall. This drug page is not intended to be a guide for prescribing Seroquel XR. Patient assistance is available through your pharmacist or doctor.
