About Seroquel

What is Seroquel?

Seroquel is the brand name for quetiapine fumarate, and it is available in standard and extended-release (Seroquel XR). It is a dibenzothiazepine derivative atypical antipsychotic medication that alters the actions of neurochemicals. Seroquel uses include treatment for schizophrenia; it is also sometimes used to treat bipolar disorder (especially episodes of mania) or major depression.

How do I take Seroquel?

Children under the age of 18 should not take Seroquel XR, however, standard Seroquel medication can be used for children as young as 10 when treating bipolar disorder or children as young as 13 when treating schizophrenia.

Dosing will depend on age as much as what is being treated. In standard release, the dosage for adults for the treatment of schizophrenia is usually 2 or 3 times daily at an amount determined by your doctor. Children's doses for schizophrenia or bipolar both would be limited to 2 doses daily at an amount determined by your doctor.

Extended release is taken 1 time daily at an amount determined by your doctor. Try to take your medication at the same time every day. Never cut, break, or chew your Seroquel XR, as you may release too much medication at once.

Always follow your doctor's instructions about dosing, and take the exact amount prescribed. Take this medication with a full glass (8 oz) of water. You may take this medication with food to avoid stomach upset.

What if I forget to take a dose of Seroquel?

Never take a double dose or any extra medication to make up for a missed dose. You may take your missed dose as soon as you remember it unless it is almost time for your next dose.

What happens if I overdose on Seroquel?

An overdose of Seroquel or Seroquel XR is potentially fatal, so call your local poison control center or emergency medical services immediately. Symptoms include: tachycardia, hypotension, exaggerated drowsiness or sedation.

Before taking Seroquel, tell your doctor if:

  • You have recently had or plan to have a procedure that requires dye to be injected for x-rays or CT scans, as the dye may interact with this medication.

  • You have a history of or currently experience heart problems or disorders, especially heart rhythm disorders, and if you are taking medication for these.

What are the possible side effects of taking Seroquel?

Other severe side effects from Seroquel medication that require medical attention include: vision problems (blurred, light halos, pain), significant lightheadedness or feeling as though you are about to pass out, swollen gums, mouth sores (especially painful ones), cough or sore throat, problems with swallowing or speech, inability to move the face (seems mask-like), rigid muscles, body tremors or other uncontrollable twitching (especially in the eyes, lips, tongue, face), skin sores, sudden weakness, confusion, irregular heartbeat.

Common side effects from taking Seroquel include: dry mouth, increased appetite and possible weight gain, mild dizziness or drowsiness, nausea and vomiting, mild stomach pain, constipation, general tired feeling.

Seroquel should be used with caution in the elderly with dementia, as there is an unknown incidence of death from other complications (e.g., heart failure, pneumonia). Do not give Seroquel XR to children under the age of 18 unless instructed to do so by your doctor.

Teenagers and young adults may have suicidal behaviors or ideations when beginning this medication. Parents and caregivers should be alert to these symptoms. Their blood pressure should also be checked often.

Do not discontinue this medication suddenly, as it risks making your condition worse. Drinking alcohol while taking this medication can increase its side effects.

You will be more prone to dehydration, overheating, and heat stroke while taking Seroquel, so use caution when choosing to exercise or work in the heat.

This medication can alter the way you think or react, as well as cause lightheadedness. Do not drive or perform other potentially hazardous tasks, or stand up or lie down too quickly until you know how you are going to react to Seroquel.

Long-term use of this medication has been linked to a movement disorder that may not be reversible. Only take this medication at the amounts and for as long as prescribed by your doctor.

Remember, if you need any Seroquel patient assistance, refer to the included medication pamphlet, then contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have more questions.
