About Seroquel

What is Seroquel?

Seroquel is the brand name for quetiapine fumarate, and it is available in standard and extended-release (Seroquel XR). It is a dibenzothiazepine derivative atypical antipsychotic medication that alters the actions of neurochemicals. Seroquel uses include treatment for schizophrenia; it is also sometimes used to treat bipolar disorder (especially episodes of mania) or major depression.

How do I take Seroquel?

Children under the age of 18 should not take Seroquel XR, however, standard Seroquel medication can be used for children as young as 10 when treating bipolar disorder or children as young as 13 when treating schizophrenia.

Dosing will depend on age as much as what is being treated. In standard release, the dosage for adults for the treatment of schizophrenia is usually 2 or 3 times daily at an amount determined by your doctor. Children's doses for schizophrenia or bipolar both would be limited to 2 doses daily at an amount determined by your doctor.

Extended release is taken 1 time daily at an amount determined by your doctor. Try to take your medication at the same time every day. Never cut, break, or chew your Seroquel XR, as you may release too much medication at once.

Always follow your doctor's instructions about dosing, and take the exact amount prescribed. Take this medication with a full glass (8 oz) of water. You may take this medication with food to avoid stomach upset.

What if I forget to take a dose of Seroquel?

Never take a double dose or any extra medication to make up for a missed dose. You may take your missed dose as soon as you remember it unless it is almost time for your next dose.

What happens if I overdose on Seroquel?

An overdose of Seroquel or Seroquel XR is potentially fatal, so call your local poison control center or emergency medical services immediately. Symptoms include: tachycardia, hypotension, exaggerated drowsiness or sedation.

Before taking Seroquel, tell your doctor if:

  • You have recently had or plan to have a procedure that requires dye to be injected for x-rays or CT scans, as the dye may interact with this medication.
