About Premphase

What is Premphase?

Premphase is a hormonal drug that is similar to birth control. It contains both a mix of estrogens (conjugated estrogens) and progestin (medroxyprogesterone acetate). It works as hormone replacement therapy to relieve symptoms of menopause and to slow or prevent bone loss.

How do I take Premphase?

Premphase comes in the form of two tablets: one maroon pill and one light blue pill. The maroon pill contains estrogens, and one of these should be taken each day for days 1-14 of the cycle. The light blue pill contains both estrogens and progestin, and it should be taken once per day from day 15 to day 28. Try to take your pill at the same time every day. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions.

What if I forget to take a dose of Premphase?

If you forget to take a dose of Premphase, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed and continue on your normal schedule. Never take a double dose to try to catch up.

What happens if I overdose on Premphase?

Signs of overdose on Premphase are similar to side effects and include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, drowsiness and breast pain. If you think you or someone you know overdosed on Premphase, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 or call your doctor.

Before taking Premphase, tell your doctor if:

  • You have or have ever had breast cancer, or if someone in your family has had breast cancer.

  • You have or have had any cancers of the reproductive system.

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Premphase pills.

  • You have ever had a stroke or a blood clot, or you have a blood clotting disorder.

  • You have liver disease.

  • You are experiencing abnormal vaginal bleeding.

  • You have gall bladder disease.

  • You have thyroid problems or you are taking thyroid replacement therapy.

  • You have high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

  • You have heart disease or have ever had a heart attack.

  • You have endometriosis.

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • You have been experiencing any swelling or fluid retention.

  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins or supplements, especially any other type of hormonal drugs or hormone replacement therapy, antibiotics, antifungals, thyroid medications, antidepressants, and antivirals.

What are the possible side effects of taking Premphase?

Possible Premphase drug side effects include nausea, vomiting, breast pain or tenderness, bloating, headache and minor weight changes. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, tell your doctor. Serious side effects that you should report to a doctor right away include negative mood changes, memory loss, breast lump/s, unusual vaginal bleeding, vaginal irritation, abdominal pain, yellow skin or eyes, swelling hands or feet, pain in the jaw/let arm/chest, weakness or numbness on one side of the body, slurred speech, vision changes and trouble breathing.

How do I store Premphase?

Store Premphase in its original packaging at a temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets. Ask your pharmacist how to properly dispose of any unused pills. Do not flush them down the toilet.

Warnings

Premphase may increase your risk of stroke, blood clots, embolism and heart attack. It may also increase your risk of developing dementia and breast cancer. Know the signs of a stroke or heart attack and keep regular appointments with your doctor.
