About Activella

What is Activella?

Activella is a pill with ingredients similar to those in hormonal birth control, estradiol (estrogen) and norethindrone (progestin), but it contains a much higher dose of estrogen. This is why other medications should be considered for menopausal symptoms, such as topical vaginal medications and non-estrogen options before prescribing Activella.

How do I take Activella?

Activella should be taken once daily at the same time every day, and can be taken with or without food. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions. They may vary based on your condition. Your doctor should re-evaluate your condition periodically to see if the medication can be discontinued.

What if I forget to take a dose of Activella?

If you miss a dose of Activella, take the missed dose as soon as your remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular regimen. Do not take a double dose or consecutive doses of Activella to try to compensate for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Activella?

Signs of Activella drug overdose include vomiting, abdominal pain, breast pain, fatigue and vaginal bleeding. If you think you are taking too much of this medication, ask your doctor about changing your dose. If you or someone else accidentally ingests an excessive amount of Activella at once, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Before taking Activella, tell your doctor if:

  • You smoke cigarettes.

  • You have ever had breast cancer or any cancer of the reproductive system.

  • You have ever had a stroke or heart attack.

  • You get migraine headaches.

  • You have asthma or you experience seizures.

What are the possible side effects of taking Activella?

Possible side effects from taking Activella include breast pain and tenderness, bloating, nausea, vomiting, headache and weight changes. If any of these side effects are drastic or severe, tell your doctor as soon as possible. More serious side effects that require immediate attention include memory loss, negative mood changes, breast lumps, unusual vaginal bleeding, yellowing skin or eyes, severe abdominal pain, worsening symptoms such as increased vaginal irritation, swelling of the hands, feet or ankles; unquenchable thirst and increased urination.

This medication can increase your risk of developing blood clots and having a stroke or heart attack. Signs of this include: pain in your left arm, jaw or chest; unusual perspiration, severe headache, weakness or numbness on one side of the body, confusion, slurred speech; pain, swelling, tingling or numbness in the arms or legs; sudden vision changes, trouble breathing and severe dizziness or fainting.
