About Oxcarbazepine

What is oxcarbazepine?

Oxcarbazepine is an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing drug that is usually prescribed to treat epilepsy. It is also used to treat motor tics (sudden involuntary movements). Oxcarbazepine is a derivative of another anticonvulsant drug called carbamazepine that has been used in the U.S. since the 1970s. Oxcarbazepine is easier on the liver than carbamazepine, has fewer drug interactions, and reduces other serious side effects such as anemia. This medication works as a sodium channel blocker. The body’s electrical balance is controlled by the opening and closing of potassium and sodium channels. People with epilepsy have been found to have genetic sodium channel mutation. By blocking voltage-sensitive sodium channels, oxcarbazepine calms neuronal firing and allows the cells to repolarize and return to a resting state. Like carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine has also been prescribed to treat mood disorders such as anxiety and bipolar disorder due to its effect on GABA receptors.

How do I take oxcarbazepine?

Oxcarbazepine comes as a tablet or a liquid to be taken orally with a glass of water. This medication is usually taken twice daily at the same times every day with or without food. If using liquid oxcarbazepine, shake the bottle thoroughly before each use. Measure the prescribed dose using a measuring device that is specifically for medication. Do not use a kitchen measuring spoon or table spoon. Rinse the measuring device with warm water and allow it to dry after each use. Your doctor may start you on a low dosage and increase it slowly over time.

What if I forget to take a dose of oxcarbazepine?

Talk to your doctor about what to do if you miss a dose of oxcarbazepine and how long you must wait between doses. In most cases, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not ta a double dose of oxcarbazepine to make up for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on oxcarbazepine?

Overdoses on oxcarbazepine are rare and have been reported in excess of 20,000 mg of oxcarbazepine. Signs of overdose may include slowed heart rate, dizziness, sedation, seizures, and coma. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on oxcarbazepine, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unconscious, call 911.

Before taking oxcarbazepine, tell your doctor if:

  • You have a history of kidney or liver disease.

  • You are pregnant or breast feeding.

  • You are taking hormonal contraceptives. This drug can decrease its effectiveness.

  • You are allergic to oxcarbazepine, carbamazepine, or any of the other ingredients in this medication.

  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins, or supplements, especially proton pump inhibitors for acid reflux, antidepressants, calcium channel blockers, diuretics, medications for mental illness, desmopressin, and theophylline.

What are the possible side effects of taking oxcarbazepine?

Side effects from taking oxcarbazepine include nausea, vomiting, fatigue, vertigo, headache, involuntary eye movement, involuntary muscle movement or shaking, slowed movements, blurred or double vision, upset stomach, and indigestion. Rare but serious side effects may include confusion, unusual bleeding, changes in mood, nervousness, low sodium levels, and a worsening of the condition being treated. If you experience any rare or persistent side effects, contact your doctor at once.

Signs of low sodium include nausea, fatigue, headache, and confusion. Low sodium can also cause more frequent seizures.

How do I store oxcarbazepine?
