About Norethindrone Acetate

This medication is used in the treatment of endometriosis. This condition causes pain, heavy or irregular periods, and other symptoms due to the type of tissue which usually lines the uterus growing outside of the womb.

Norethindrone Acetate can also be used in the treatment of abnormal periods, in order to bring about a more normal cycle for women who have had normal periods but have not bled in 6 months (not due to menopause or pregnancy).

This drug can also be used as a test for female hormones. Its medication class is called progestins, which work by stopping the lining of the uterus from growing. This means it can also be used to prevent pregnancy. When used for this purpose, it is sold under a different brand name in a smaller dosage.

Norethindrone Acetate is a tablet which should be taken by mouth. Depending on your condition and the control of symptoms, this drug will be taken on your own unique schedule. When used in the treatment of endometriosis, Norethindrone Acetate will generally be taken once per day for 6 to 9 months or until breakthrough bleeding is bothersome.

For women who have stopped menstruating and are using this drug to bring them to a normal cycle, Norethindrone Acetate is taken every day for 5 to 10 days during the second half of a planned cycle.

You should take this medication once a day, every day, around the same time that you are scheduled to take it. Follow the instructions that come with your prescription, and if you do not understand any of them, ask your doctor. Take care to take this drug exactly as you are directed. Be sure not to take more or less than directed.

When used in the treatment of endometriosis, you will likely be prescribed a low dose to start with. Your doctor will then gradually increase your dosage about once every 2 weeks. While this drug will help control your condition, it will not cure it. Even if you feel well, you should continue to take this medication as directed. You should not stop taking this drug without speaking to your doctor.

As soon as you realize you have missed a dose, take the dose. If it is almost time for your next dose however, skip the dose and continue taking the medication as usual. You should not take a double dose in order to make up for one you have missed.

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
