The main active ingredient in Narcan is naloxone, and it works by targeting receptors in the brain and removing the opioids from the receptors. How do I take Narcan?

Take the Narcan pack and peel back the safety seal to access the spray bottle. Place your thumb on the bottom of the plunger and place your index and middle fingers on top of the nozzle. Do not apply any pressure to the spray until you are ready to administer. Place the person who has overdosed on their back and tilt their head back while supporting their neck. Put the spay nozzle up the person’s nostril and spray the full dose of Narcan into the nose.

What if I forget to take a dose of Narcan?

Because this medication is used as needed, missing a dose should not be an issue. If additional doses are needed after using the first one, apply Narcan to the other nostril following the same dosage instructions.

What happens if I overdose on Narcan?

Take the person suspected of an overdose to a hospital right away after applying Narcan. If the person is unresponsive after using the medication, call 911 immediately.
