Mefenamic Acid is a generic NSAID that comes in capsule form and it is used to relieve mild or moderate menstrual pain. It is meant to be used for a short term only (up to 1 week). This drug works by relieving pain and inflammation by stopping the body from producing a substance that causes these symptoms.

How do I use Mefenamic Acid?

Mefenamic Acid capsules should be taken orally and this drug is typically prescribed to be taken with food every 6 hours or as needed for as long as 1 week.

What if I forget to use a dose of Mefenamic Acid?

Take your missed dose of Mefenamic Acid as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

What happens if I overdose on Mefenamic Acid?

In case of overdose, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do, or seek immediate medical attention.

Symptoms of overdose on Mefenamic Acid include:

  • extreme drowsiness

  • nausea or vomiting

  • stomach pain

  • bloody vomit

  • vomit that looks like coffee grounds

  • slowed breathing

  • blisters, rash, itching, or hives

  • swelling of the eyes, face, lips, tongue, throat, hands, or arms

  • difficulty swallowing

  • pale skin

  • rapid heartbeat

  • extreme drowsiness

  • nausea

  • unusual bleeding or unusual bruising

  • loss of appetite

  • pain in the upper right part of the stomach

  • flu-like symptoms

  • yellowing of the skin or eyes

  • cloudy, discolored, or bloody urine

  • back pain

  • difficult or painful urination

How do I store Mefenamic Acid?

Store this medication tightly closed when not in use. Store it at room temperature and keep away from excess moisture and heat. Keep this medication out of reach of children and away from pets. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.

Warnings

  • Do not let anyone take your medication.

  • Patients who take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) (not including aspirin) may have a higher risk of having a heart attack or a stroke, and the risk may be even higher for patients who take NSAIDs for a long period of time.

  • Do not take an Mefenamic Acid or any other NSAIDs if you have recently had a heart attack, unless your doctor has directed you to do so.

  • Tell your doctor if you or anyone in your family has or has ever had heart disease, a heart attack, or a stroke.

  • Tell your doctor if you smoke.

  • Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following symptoms: slurred speech, chest pain, shortness of breath, or weakness in one part or side of the body.
