About Loseasonique

What is LoSeasonique?

LoSeasonique is an extended cycle birth control drug, meaning that it helps prevent pregnancy and regulates your menstrual cycle so that you only have four periods per year. It contains both an estrogen and a progestin (two female hormones), and it works by preventing ovulation and making it more difficult for sperm to reach the uterus.

How do I take LoSeasonique?

Take the first pill in the LoSeasonique package on the first day of your period or the first Sunday after your period starts. Take one LoSeasonique pill at the same time every day, going in the order the pills appear in the packet so that you take 84 active tablets (containing female hormones) followed by 7 “reminder” pills. You should get your period while you are taking the reminder pills, although you may experience some breakthrough bleeding (‘spotting’) in the first three months of LoSeasonique use.

What if I forget to take a dose of LoSeasonique?

It is important that you take LoSeasonique at the same time every day, as missing a dose raises your risk for becoming pregnant. If you do miss an active dose one day, take two pills the next day and then resume your normal dosage schedule. If you miss two active doses, take two pills for two days in a row before resuming your normal schedule. If you miss three or more active doses, skip the missed doses and resume your normal dosage schedule on the day you remember. Use a back-up birth control method for at least a week if you miss two or more active pills. If you miss any reminder pills, throw them out; because they do not contain the medication’s active ingredients, missing them is not an issue.

What happens if I overdose on LoSeasonique?

Overdosing on LoSeasonique may lead to irregular vaginal bleeding, nausea, and vomiting. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what to do if you or someone in your household has overdosed.

Before taking LoSeasonique, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications

  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications or supplements

  • You have high blood pressure or varicose veins

  • You have heart disease or circulation problems

  • You have diabetes, with or without complications

  • You have a blood clotting disorder

  • You have a personal or family history of hormone-related cancer, or you have had an abnormal mammogram

  • You have liver or kidney disease

  • You sometimes get severe migraines

  • You have unexplained vaginal bleeding, or you have a history of irregular menstrual cycles

  • You have high cholesterol

  • You have epilepsy or another seizure disorder

  • You have gallbladder disease

  • You have an underactive thyroid

  • You have a history of depression

  • You have tuberculosis

  • You are breastfeeding or have recently given birth

What are the possible side effects of taking LoSeasonique?

LoSeasonique sometimes causes mild nausea, stomach cramps, bloating, vomiting, breast soreness, changes in hair growth, darkening of facial skin, weight gain, vaginal irritation, or decreased libido. These side effects usually subside as your body adjusts to the medication, but if any side effects are bothersome or last a long time, tell your doctor. Stop taking LoSeasonique and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the following rare but serious side effects: severe migraines, swollen hands or feet, pain or warmth in your legs, a breast lump, new or worsening depression, sudden coughing or difficulty breathing, severe nausea, abdominal pain, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, or sudden numbness and weakness.

How do I store LoSeasonique?

Keep LoSeasonique in its original package at room temperature. Do not store it in the bathroom, as heat and humidity can negatively affect it. Do not leave it anywhere that children or pets could easily access it.

Warnings

Before taking LoSeasonique, let your doctor know if you have any risk factors for blood clots or heart attacks (including being over 35 or being a smoker). Your doctor will need to determine if this birth control medication is safe for you. Contact your doctor if you miss two or more periods while taking LoSeasonique, as this may be a sign you are pregnant. Keep in mind that LoSeasonique will not prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.
