About Levonorgestrel

This medicine is a progestin used to prevent pregnancy after known or suspected contraceptive failure or unprotected intercourse.

An additional patient information leaflet is available with this medicine. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this information. TAKE THIS MEDICINE as soon as possible within 72 hours after suspected birth control failure or after you have unprotected sexual intercourse. Follow the directions provided by your doctor. If you experience vomiting within 2 hours after taking this medicine, contact your doctor for instructions. This medicine may be taken any time during the menstrual cycle. A physical exam is not needed before taking this medicine. If you are unsure about your general health or pregnancy status, a follow-up physical or pelvic exam may be needed after taking this medicine. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature below 77 degrees F (25 degrees C), away from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, contact your doctor immediately.

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, and vaginal bleeding.

Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking nevirapine, rifampin, or St. John's wort. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking antifungals (eg, ketoconazole), aprepitant, barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital), bosentan, carbamazepine, felbamate, griseofulvin, HIV protease inhibitors (eg, indinavir), hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), modafinil, oxcarbazepine, penicillins (eg, amoxicillin), rufinamide, tetracyclines (eg, doxycycline), topiramate, troglitazone, anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), beta-adrenergic blockers (eg, metoprolol), corticosteroids (eg, prednisone), selegiline, theophylline, troleandomycin, lamotrigine, or valproic acid. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including a history of ectopic pregnancy, diabetes, allergies, or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you are premenstrual. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you are experiencing abnormal vaginal bleeding; you are pregnant or suspect that you are pregnant; you have had a stroke or history of bleeding in the brain, known or suspected breast cancer, or a blood clotting disorder. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine.

SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include nausea; dizziness; headache; breast tenderness; changes in mentrual flow; diarrhea; stomach pain; tiredness; or vomiting. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience spotting instead of your usual period, severe lower stomach pain, or if you miss your menstrual period. An allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue.
