About Ella

This medicine is a progesterone agonist/antagonist used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse or known or suspected birth control failure.

Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. An additional patient information leaflet is available with this medicine. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this information. This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. KEEP THIS MEDICINE IN ITS ORIGINAL PACKAGING until you are ready to take it. Do NOT take it if the package is torn or broken. TAKE THIS MEDICINE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE after known or suspected birth control failure or after you have unprotected sexual intercourse. The dose must be taken within 120 hours (5 days), or as directed by your doctor. This medicine can be used any time during the menstrual cycle. IF VOMITING OCCURS WITHIN 3 HOURS after taking this medicine, talk with your health care provider to discuss whether to repeat that dose. IF YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT YOUR GENERAL HEALTH or pregnancy status, a follow-up physical or pelvic exam may be needed after taking this medicine. STORE THIS MEDICINE between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), away from heat, moisture, and light. KEEP THIS MEDICINE out of the reach of children and away from pets. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, contact your doctor right away.

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if you are taking azole antifungals (eg, itraconazole, ketoconazole), barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital), bosentan, carbamazepine, dabigatran, dexamethasone, digoxin, efavirenz, felbamate, griseofulvin, hormonal contraceptives (eg, birth control pills), hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), modafinil, nevirapine, oxcarbazepine, primidone, rifamycins (eg, rifabutin, rifampin, rifapentine), St. John's wort, or topiramate. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, including a history of ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside of uterus), allergies, or breast-feeding. Tell your doctor if you have not had your first menstrual period or if you are overweight. USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you know or suspect that you are pregnant, you have already taken this medicine during your current menstrual cycle, or you have been through menopause. Use of this medicine in CHILDREN under age 18 who have not started having a menstrual cycle is not recommended. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of giving this medicine to your child. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about taking this medicine.

SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include changes in menstrual flow or duration, dizziness, headache, nausea, stomach pain, or tiredness. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience missed menstrual period, pain during menstrual period, or spotting instead of your usual period. AN ALLERGIC REACTION to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; or swelling of the mouth, faces, lips, or tongue.
