About Latanoprost

What is latanoprost?

Latanoprost, or latanoprost ophthalmic solution, is applied to the eyes to treat the progression of glaucoma or ocular hypertension (high pressure in the eyes). It works by increasing drainage of aqueous humor, a gelatinous fluid in the eye that helps it to maintain its structure and shape as well as transport nutrients to eye tissues. Increasing the drainage or outflow of this substance reduces overall intraocular pressure or IOP.

How do I take latanoprost?

atanoprost comes in a small dropper bottle and applied to the affected eye or eyes once a day in the evening. The typical dosage is one drop of latanoprost solution. Wash your hands with soap and water and remove contact lenses before using this medication. To apply the solution to the eye, tilt the head back and pull down the lower eyelid. Drop the solution into the space between the lid and eye. Do not allow the dropper to touch your eye to prevent contamination. Close your eyes and gently press the inside corner of your eye for one to two minutes. Try not to blink so that the eye absorbs as much medication as possible. You may reinsert your contact lenses after 15 minutes. Talk to your doctor about using other eye medications along with latanoprost.

What if I forget to take a dose of latanoprost?

If you miss a dose of latanoprost, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next application, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not apply a double dose of the medication.

What happens if I overdose on latanoprost?

There is no information on latanoprost ophthalmic solution overdose due to the unlikelihood of occurrence. Excessive use of this solution could lead to increased side effects and eye irritation. If latanoprost is swallowed, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

What are the possible side effects of taking latanoprost?

Possible side effects from taking latanoprost include a darkening of the color of the iris, particularly a darkening of brown colors, darkening and thickening of the eye lashes, and darkening of the skin of the eyelids. Change in eye color is gradual and is due to increased melanin content. It is not a dangerous side effect but it may be permanent. Other side effects include blurred vision, swelling of the eye, eyelid redness, and a temporary burning sensation during application.

How do I store latanoprost?

Latanoprost solution should be stored in a refrigerator at a temperature between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit until it is opened for use. It may then be stored at room temperature for up to six weeks. Store opened bottles in a cool, dry place and protect them from light. Discard this medication if it has been opened and not used after six weeks. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of bottles that contain medication.

Warnings

Latanoprost may cause the color of the eye to become darker over periods of extended use. This particularly affects brown pigments. Talk to your doctor about using this medication before or after eye surgery.
