About Fioricet

What is Fioricet?

Fioricet is a combination drug containing butalbital, acetaminophen and caffeine. Its chemical classification is methylxanthine and its pharmacologic classification is as a barbiturate. Fioricet uses include relieving tension or muscle contraction-related headaches. Butalbital is a barbiturate that affects the central nervous system, while the acetaminophen is used to relieve pain and fever. While not habit forming, acetaminophen, when taken in large doses, can result in liver damage; butalbital, however, may be habit-forming and should be monitored by your prescribing physician.

How do I take Fioricet?

Fioricet should be taken exactly as prescribed. Never take Fioricet in large doses or for longer periods than recommended by your treating physician. Tell your doctor if Fioricet seems to lose its efficacy or if your pain worsens.

Take Fioricet by mouth with food or milk if it upsets your stomach. Each dose should be around four hours apart; however, your doctor will determine your specific needs. Your dosage will be based on your medical condition, age, overall health, and response to treatment. Best results will be obtained if you take Fioricet at the first signs of headache; if you wait until the headache is strong, Fioricet may not be as effective. If your dose is different than presented here, you should follow your doctor’s directions and ask questions on any instruction you do not understand.

What if I forget to take a dose of Fioricet?

If you forget a dose of Fioricet, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take an extra dose to make up for your missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Fioricet?

If Fioricet drug overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center. Symptoms of potential overdose include severe drowsiness, slow and shallow breathing, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, sweating, abdominal pain, yellowing or the eyes or skin, and dark urine. If the patient is unconscious, contact emergency medical response by dialing 911.

Before taking Fioricet, tell your doctor if:

  • You have kidney disease.

  • You have liver disease.

  • You have a history of mental illness or thoughts of suicide.

  • You have ever had alcoholic liver disease or if you drink more than three alcoholic drinks per day.

  • You are allergic to acetaminophen, caffeine, or butalbital.

  • You have a history of breathing problems, such as bronchopneumonia.

  • You have mental/mood disorders.

  • You have abdominal problems, such as stomach ulcers.

  • You are pregnant or intend to become pregnant.

  • You are nursing or intend to nurse.

What are the possible side effects of taking Fioricet?

Possible Fioricet drug side effects, which may or may not be severe but should be reported to your medical provider, include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, shaking, shortness of breath, increased urination, lightheadedness, drowsiness or changes in your sleeping patterns. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

To reduce your risk of dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience mental or mood changes, fainting, seizures, or a fast or irregular heartbeat. Contact emergency services at 911 if you experience an allergic reaction or suspect an allergic reaction. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash and itching, swelling (particularly of the face, tongue or throat), severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.

How do I store Fioricet?

Fioricet should be stored in the container in which it came, away from moisture and heat. Keep track of your medication, as butalbital is a drug of abuse and can be subject to improper use.

Warnings

Extended Fioricet use may cause withdrawal reactions, particularly if used for a long time or in high doses. Do not suddenly stop taking Fioricet without your doctor’s knowledge, as withdrawal symptoms may occur. Fioricet may cause abnormal drug-seeking behavior (addiction) and may increase your risk of addiction if taken with alcohol or other drugs. Contact your doctor if you experience an increase in the frequency or the severity of your headaches.

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Fioricet, as alcohol may increase your risk of liver damage from the acetaminophen.
