About Butalbital Acetaminophen

Butalbital acetaminophen is a combination drug containing a barbiturate (butalbital) and a pain reliever (acetaminophen). This medication is prescribed to treat chronic tension headaches.

Follow your doctor’s instructions and never take more than the recommended dose; butalbital can be addictive, and excessive use of acetaminophen can cause liver damage. Don’t suddenly stop taking this medication without talking to your doctor; suddenly quitting butalbital acetaminophen can lead to adverse withdrawal symptoms.

Because you will take this medication on an as-needed basis when you have a tension headache, forgetting a dose shouldn’t be an issue.

An overdose of butalbital acetaminophen can be deadly; if you or someone in your home has overdosed, get to an emergency room right away. Early signs of an overdose may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, sweating, and weakness. Later symptoms may include upper stomach pain, dark urine, jaundice, extreme drowsiness, fainting, and shallow breathing.

Before taking butalbital acetaminophen, tell your doctor if:

· You are allergic to butalbital or acetaminophen

· You are taking any other medications, vitamins, or supplements

· You have porphyria

· You have liver or kidney disease

· You have cirrhosis of the liver or drink more than three alcoholic beverages daily

· You have a stomach or intestinal disorder

· You have a history of drug or alcohol abuse

· You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy

Butalbital acetaminophen may cause dizziness, drowsiness, muscle tiredness, leg pain, increased sweating or urination, dry mouth, numbness or tingling, constipation, vomiting, heartburn, or difficulty swallowing. Tell your doctor if any of these common side effects lasts a long time or becomes bothersome. Call your doctor immediately if you have a fast heart rate, shortness of breath, severe lightheadedness, unusual mood changes, upper stomach pain, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, or seizures. Stop taking butalbital acetaminophen and get emergency medical attention if you have a skin rash that spreads and begins to blister or peel.

Keep butalbital acetaminophen in a tightly sealed container at room temperature. Don’t expose your medicine to excessive heat or moisture. As with all prescription drugs, keep butalbital acetaminophen out of reach of children and pets.

Warnings

Because butalbital acetaminophen may cause temporary dizziness or drowsiness, you should avoid driving until you know you can do so safely. Don’t drink alcohol while taking this medication, as alcohol can increase your risk of liver damage. Don’t take other medications containing acetaminophen (even over-the-counter products) without first talking to your doctor.

Brand Names

The combination of butalbital and acetaminophen is found in the brand name drug Bupap. However, Bupap can’t be substituted for generic butalbital acetaminophen without written medical permission because the strengths are different. If your doctor has determined that butalbital acetaminophen is the best medicine to treat your tension headaches, get a free coupon from FamilyWize now.
