About Denavir

What is Denavir?

Denavir is an antiviral medication that contains penciclovir. This medication works best when applied topically and works by inhibiting herpes simplex viral DNA synthesis. It stops the replication of the virus and promotes the healing of herpes simplex cold sores. Denavir is not a cure for herpes.

How do I take Denavir?

Before applying Denavir, clean and dry the affected area. Cover cold sores with Denavir cream every two hours over the course of four days. It does not need to be applied during sleeping hours. Wash your hands after each application. Follow any application instructions provided to you by your doctor or pharmacist. Dosing and other instructions may vary by patient.

What if I forget to take a dose of Denavir?

If you forget to apply a dose of Denavir, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your normal routine. Do not use to consecutive applications of Denavir to make up for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Denavir?

Denavir overdose is unlikely since it is poorly absorbed if swallowed. If you think you are using too much of this medication, tell your doctor. If someone accidentally swallowed a large amount of Denavir, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Before taking Denavir, tell your doctor if:

  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any medications or any of the ingredients in Denavir.

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • You are taking other prescription or nonprescription medications.

What are the possible side effects of taking Denavir?

Possible side effects from using Denavir include burning, stinging and numbness at the site of application and headache. If you experience an allergic reaction or if any of these side effects are severe, contact your doctor at once.

How do I store Denavir?

Store Denavir tightly closed in its container at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep your medication out of reach of children and pets.

This medication is for topical use only and should not be used near the eyes. If your cold sores do not improve or get worse within four days, tell your doctor. Denavir works best when it is applied at the first sign of symptoms.
