About Bystolic

What is Bystolic?

Bystolic is a beta blocker medication that is used to treat hypertension or high blood pressure. Beta blockers work by stopping the effects of adrenaline hormones that cause the heart to accelerate and blood pressure to rise. Bystolic is unique because it also has a nitric oxide-potentiating vasodilator effect. In other words, it also causes the blood vessels to widen to allow blood to flow more freely. In small doses, Bystolic only inhibits the B1 receptor rather than both B1 and B2, which can cut down on the risk of side effects. The possibility of blocking B2 receptors depends on the size of the dose and the way the individual metabolizes the medication.

How do I take Bystolic?

Buy this medication in your local pharmacy using Bystolic discount coupons or discount cards from FamilyWize. Bystolic comes as a tablet to be taken orally with or without food. The size of your dosage will depend on your individual needs. Follow instructions given to you by your doctor. Most patients will begin with a dose of 5mg per day, and the dose size is slowly increased over time. Do not suddenly stop taking Bystolic if you feel better. If you wish to discontinue using your medication, talk to your doctor about slowly decreasing your dose.

What if I forget to take a dose of Bystolic?

If you forget a dose of Bystolic, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose or two consecutive doses of Bystolic to make up for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Bystolic?

Signs of overdose on Bystolic may include little to no breathing, slowed or extremely faint heartbeat, dizziness, double vision, confusion, hypoglycemia, fatigue, vomiting, and heart failure. If you or someone you know has overdosed on Bystolic, contact the Poison Control Center immediately at 1-800-222-1222, or if the person has stopped breathing or is in a coma, contact 911 emergency services.

Before taking Bystolic, tell your doctor if:

  • You have a history of heart disease or heart failure, or you have blocked arteries.

  • You have diabetes or hypoglycemia.

  • You have kidney or liver disease.

  • You have an overactive thyroid.

  • You have asthma or lung disease.

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • You are allergic to beta blockers or any of the ingredients in Bystolic.

  • You have bradycardia or a slow heart rate.

  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins or supplements, especially asthma medications, CYP2D6 inhibitors such as quinidine and fluoxetine, other beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, and glycosides like digoxin.

What are the possible side effects of taking Bystolic?

Possible side effects from taking Bystolic include headache, fatigue, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, and insomnia. Less common but serious side effects include being short of breath, slow heartbeat, uneven heartbeats, and cold or numb hands and feet. If you experience any serious side effects, tell your doctor at once.

How do I store Bystolic?

Store Bystolic in an airtight container and protect it from light. Keep this medication at a temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
