How do I use bimatoprost?

Wash your hands before each application. Tilt your head back and pull down on your lower eyelid to create a pocket. Gently squeeze a drop of bimatoprost into the eyelid pocket, and then close your eye for 2 to 3 minutes with a finger held over the inside corner of the eye to prevent the medicine from leaking out. If your doctor has prescribed more than 1 drop per eye, wait at least 5 minutes before applying the next drop. If your doctor has prescribed any other eye drops, wait at least 10 minutes after you bimatoprost dose before using them.

What if I forget to use a dose of bimatoprost?

Administer the forgotten dose as soon as possible once you remember, unless it’s almost time for your next schedule dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and resume your normal schedule. Do not apply more drops than you usually do for a single dose.

What happens if I overdose on bimatoprost?

You are unlikely to overdose on bimatoprost when applying it to your eyes, but the eye drops may be harmful if swallowed. If you or someone in your home has accidentally ingested some of this medicine, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 to find out what steps to take.

Before using bimatoprost, tell your doctor if:

• You are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medicine, or you have any other allergies

• You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements

• You have or have had any eye-related medical conditions, such as uveitis or macular edema

• You have an eye infection or swelling

• You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or planning a pregnancy

What are the possible side effects of using bimatoprost?

Bimatoprost may cause mild stinging, burning, redness, or irritation when first applied to the eye. If you have any irritation that becomes severe, or if you experience vision changes, increased sensitivity to light, eye pain or swelling, or swelling and redness of your eyelids, contact your doctor right away. When used for a long period of time, bimatoprost may cause the iris to change colors or eyelashes to thicken. It is not known if there are any associated long-term effects, but talk to your doctor if you are concerned about changes in eye color or eyelashes.

How do I store bimatoprost?

Bimatoprost may be stored between 36 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep the eye dropper bottle tightly sealed when it is not in use, and store it somewhere that children and pets can’t reach. If you no longer need the medication or it has expired, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of it.

Warnings

Do not use more of this medicine than has been prescribed; using too much bimatoprost will not lower eye pressure any faster, and it may actually make the medicine less effective over time. If you wear contact lenses, take them out while applying bimatoprost and wait at least 15 minutes after the application to put them back in. Bimatoprost can discolor soft contact lenses.

Bimatoprost is a generic drug; it was also formerly available under the brand name Lumigan, but this product has been discontinued in the US.
