What is Axona?

Axona is a medical food. Medical foods treat a disease or illness through dietary means and have been approved by the FDA to treat the illnesses they are indicated to treat. Research has shown that diminished glucose metabolism in the brain is a contributing factor to Alzheimer’s symptoms. The brain relies on glucose for fuel. Cells transform glucose into ATP, which drives cell functions and synaptic activity in the brain. Diminished glucose metabolism starts to occur several years before Alzheimer’s symptoms develop. Luckily, cells are able to use keytones as an alternative fuel source to produce ATP when there is a lack of glucose. The main ingredient in Axona is caprylic triglyceride, a type of fatty acid that can be found in natural sources like coconut oil.

How do I take Axona?

Axona comes in the form of a powder that is to be mixed with water for consumption. In clinical studies, Axona was only mixed with water, but the product remains stable when it is mixed with other foods or drinks such as juice, milk or yogurt. One packet of Axona is normally prescribed per day, and it should be consumed after a meal, preferably after lunch or dinner.
