About Accolate

What is Accolate?

Accolate is the drug zafirlukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) that helps prevent the symptoms of asthma. It works by inhibiting the actions of naturally occurring substances that cause swelling and tightening of air passages. Accolate may also be prescribed to treat the symptoms of allergic rhinitis or to help prevent breathing difficulties that may arise during exercise in those with asthma. It is not to be used to stop a sudden attack of asthma.

How do I take Accolate?

Accolate is administered in tablet form and is taken twice daily with water an hour or two before meals. Do not take this medication to treat a sudden asthma attack; use the inhaler prescribed by your doctor. Do not stop taking the Accolate medicine or change the dosage amount or regimen without written permission from you doctor.

What if I forget to take a dose of Accolate?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of Accolate, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the number of pills taken or alter the dosing regimen to make up for one that was missed.

What happens if I overdose on Accolate?

If an overdose of Accolate is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Symptoms of an overdose include a rash or vomiting.

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You are taking cyclosporine, anticoagulants, phenytoin, aspirin or salicylate medications; carbamazepine, calcium channel blockers, tolbutamide, erythromycin, or theophylline

What are the possible side effects of taking Accolate?

Some people have reported side effects after taking their Accolate medicine. Less severe symptoms include a headache. If this condition should persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing), appetite loss, excessive tiredness or lack of energy, flu-like symptoms, hoarseness, nausea; pain in the right upper section of the stomach; pain, tingling, numbness, or burning sensation in the hands or feet; symptoms of jaundice; or agitation, suicidal behavior, depression, irritability, aggressive behavior, tremors, unusual dreams, anxiety, visual or aural hallucinations, or sleep difficulties.
