About Zithromax

What is Zithromax?

Zithromax (azithromycin) is a type of broad spectrum antibiotic known as a microlide, i.e., a microcyclic-structured antibiotic developed from various strains of Streptomyces. It works by inhibiting the growth of bacterial infections by blocking 50S ribosomal subunit. It is often prescribed to treat skin infections, STIs, reproductive infections, respiratory infections such as bronchitis or pneumonia, ear infections, and more.

Note: The uses for Zithromax do not include the treatment of viral or fungal infections. This medication is available in a variety of formats, including tablets, oral suspensions, or powder packets for reconstitution.

How do I take Zithromax?

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take more or less medication than prescribed, and do not discontinue this medication before instructed to.

Your doctor will determine your dosing and which type of Zithromax to take based on what your infection is, your age, and your medical history. You may be prescribed the Zithromax Z-Pak, Tri-Pak, or just a single tablet. Often, you will take 1 dose by mouth with a full glass (8oz) of water 1 time daily at the same time every day. You can usually take your Zithromax with or without food.

If you have been prescribed the packet of powder for reconstitution, it must be mixed with water before you take it. Pour the contents in the Zithromax packet into at least 2oz of water and stir until mixed. Drink the entire dose immediately. To ensure you actually receive the complete dose, add some more water to the glass, swirl, and drink. If you have been prescribed the oral suspension, you should always shake your medication before measuring your dose, and utilize a dose measuring spoon or cup.

What if I forget to take a dose of Zithromax?

Never take extra medication to make up for a missed dose. If it's almost time to take your next dose, skip the missed dose. Otherwise, you may take your dose as soon as you remember it.

If you miss more than 2 doses, contact your doctor about how to proceed. Skipping doses can increase your risk of further infection, especially of antibiotic resistant infections.

What happens if I overdose on Zithromax?

Overdose on Zithromax is not likely as those who have taken higher doses have only experienced normal side effects. If you are concerned about a large overdose, call your local poison control center or seek emergency medical assistance.

Before taking Zithromax , tell your doctor if:

  • You have any medical allergies, especially to other antibiotics (e.g., telithromycin, clarithromycin, erythromycin).

  • You have had any adverse reactions to other antibiotics, especially jaundice or a liver problem.

  • You are breastfeeding.

  • You have or have a history of heart disease or disorder, especially if you are elderly or have a heart rhythm problem.

  • You have or have a history of Long QT syndrome or myasthenia gravis.

  • You have or have a history of kidney or liver disease or disorder, especially jaundice.

  • You regularly take antacids, especially those containing aluminum or magnesium.

  • You are regularly exposed to sunlight, e.g., for work.

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription drugs, medication, supplements, or vitamins, especially antacids, other antibiotics, antidepressants, antiemetics, antimalarial medications, antiretrovirals, blood thinners, heart rhythm medications, MAOIs, methadone, any psychiatric medication including antipsychotics, or cancer medications.

What are the possible side effects of taking Zithromax?

Some Zithromax side effects are severe and require immediate medical attention. These include: fever with sore throat or burning eyes followed by a red-purple skin rash that blisters and peels, jaundice, hives and itching, pounding or fast heart beats, difficulty breathing, severe dizziness with headache and chest pain, fainting, swelling in the face or lips, swelling in the tongue or throat, loss of appetite, upper stomach pain, nausea, dark urine, clay-colored stool, or diarrhea that is watery or bloody.

Common Zithromax side effects include: mild dizziness, mild nausea or stomach upset, mild stomach pains, vaginal itching or discharge, mild diarrhea. You do not need to talk to your doctor unless these persist or get worse.

How do I store Zithromax?

Store Zithromax at room temperature and away from excess heat or moisture. Do not allow the oral suspension to freeze.

Warnings

Do not skip doses of this medication or discontinue this medication before instructed, even if you feel well, as it may lead to a reoccurrence of your illness with stronger symptoms and also increases your risk of developing antibiotic resistant infections.

Do not use Zithromax if you have previously had side effects including liver problems or jaundice to this or another antibiotic.

The elderly are more at risk for side effects or worsened side effects, especially on heart rhythm, which may become life-threatening.

This medication will make you more sensitive to sunlight and increase your risk of sunburn. Avoid tanning beds, and keep yourself well covered or use sunscreen which is SPF 30 or higher.

If you vomit after taking your medication, call your doctor immediately. You may need to take extra medication, or this may be an indication of a worsening infection.
