About Xulane

What is Xulane?

Xulane is the generic name for a transdermal contraceptive patch containing ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and norelgestromin (a progestin). This medication prevents pregnancy by preventing ovulation, and changing the cervical mucus and the uterine lining.

How do I take Xulane?

Xulane is administered as a transdermal patch, applied to the skin once a week for three weeks, after which there is patch free period for one week. Place the patch on a clean dry area of upper torso, outer arm, buttock, or abdomen. Do not place it in a location where it can be rubbed by clothing or other contact. Check the patch daily to make sure it is firmly attached. Apply the first patch on the first day your menstrual period begins, or the Sunday immediately following. Use back up birth control for the first seven days. After the third week (week 4), you will have a week in which no patch is applied, and your menstrual cycle should begin. Begin a new patch cycle at the end of the fourth week. The patch site can be relocated if there is irritation.

What if I forget to take a dose of Xulane?

If you forget to apply the Xulane patch at the start of a cycle, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, this creates a new Day 1 and requires a subsequent adjustment to the Patch Change day. Use an alternate means of birth control for one week. If you forget to change the patch for one or two days in the middle of a cycle, do so as soon as you remember and maintain the regular schedule. If more than two days have elapsed from the scheduled change day, stop the current cycle, apply a new patch, and begin a new cycle. Use alternative birth control measures for one week after application.

What happens if I overdose on Xulane?

If an overdose of Xulane is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has lost consciousness or stopped breathing, contact Emergency Services at 911.
