About Xartemis XR

What is Xartemis XR?

Xartemis XR is a combination of the opioid oxycodone and acetaminophen that is prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain. It works by affecting the way the central nervous system perceives pain.

How do I take Xartemis XR?

Xartemis XR is administered in tablet form and is taken orally, either on a dosing schedule or on an as-needed basis, depending on the prescription and the medical profile of the patient. Swallow the tablet whole, with food and with plenty of water. Do not lick, crush, chew, smoke, inhale, dissolve in liquid, or inject this medication.

What if I forget to take a dose of Xartemis XR?

If you are on a regular dosing schedule and you miss a dose, take Xartemis XR as soon as you remember and are able, unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. In this instance, skip the one missed and resume the normal schedule. Do not increase the number of pills or change the schedule to make up for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Xartemis XR?

If an overdose of Xartemis XR is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include blue skin under fingernails or around the mouth or lips, cold or clammy skin, breathing difficulties, dizziness, excessive sleepiness, extreme tiredness, fainting, flu-like symptoms, limp or weak muscles, appetite loss, constricted or dilated pupils, nausea, pain in the upper right part of the stomach, diminished heartbeat, sweating, unusual bleeding or bruising, vomiting, and signs of jaundice.

Before taking Xartemis XR, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to oxycodone, acetaminophen, or any of the ingredients in Xartemis XR

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You have, or have had, liver, kidney, thyroid, gall bladder, or pancreas disease

  • You have, or have had, Addison’s disease, lung disease, glaucoma, kyphoscoliosis, low blood pressure, a head injury, or seizures

  • You are taking, or have recently stopped taking, anticoagulants, acetaminophen, antidepressants, isoniazid, antihistamines, carbamazepine, diuretics, phenobarbital, buprenorphine, rifampin, phenytoin, butorphanol, phenothiazine, antibiotics, ipratropium, antifungal medications, muscle relaxants, rifabutin, nalbuphine, naloxone, pentazocine, isocarboxazid, phenelzine, selegiline, other narcotic pain medication, tranquillizers, sedatives, sleeping pills, or tranylcypromine

  • You are taking, or have taken, medications to treat anxiety, mental illness, urinary problems, nausea, irritable bowel syndrome, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, or medications to treat colds or allergies

What are the possible side effects of taking Xartemis XR?

Some individuals have reported side effects after taking Xartemis XR. Mild symptoms include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, flushed skin, headache, loss of appetite, mood changes, nausea, stomach pain, sweating, vomiting, or weakness. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include chest pain, seizures, signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; difficulty breathing or swallowing; hives, rash, or itching), extreme drowsiness, bradycardia, tachycardia, or orthostatic hypotension.

How do I store Xartemis XR?

Keep Xartemis XR tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from the extremes of temperature and humidity.
