About Valproic Acid

Valproic acid is a generic, anticonvulsant medication and a mood-stabilizing drug that is used to treat certain types of seizures. Valproic acid may also be prescribed to people with bipolar disorder to help to control episodes of mania. It may also be prescribed to prevent migraine headaches. Valproic acid may be used alone or prescribed to be taken with additional medications.

Valproic Acid is available in capsule, extended-release tablet, a delayed-release tablet, a sprinkle capsule, and a liquid to be taken orally.

The capsules, delayed-release tablets, sprinkle capsules, and liquid are typically prescribed to be taken 2 or more times per day. The extended-release tablets are typically prescribed to be taken 1 time per day. Consult with your doctor for specific instructions on how to use this medicine.

Take your missed dose of Valproic Acid as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
