About Treximet

What is Treximet?

Treximet is a combination of two medications - sumatriptan and naproxen - each performing a different role in treating migraine headaches. Sumatriptan is a selective serotonin receptor agonist (SSRA) that blocks pain and pain signals by narrowing blood vessels. It also prevents the release of the substances that cause the nausea, pain, and other symptoms of migraines. Naproxen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that reduces the presence of hormones that cause inflammation and pain.

How do I take Treximet?

Treximet is a tablet that is taken at the first signs of a migraine or after the migraine has started (it will not prevent the onset of a migraine). If one tablet does not provide relief, a second may be taken, but no sooner than two hours after the first one. Only two doses of the Treximet drug can be taken in a twenty-four hour period.

What if I forget to take a dose of Treximet?

Because Treximet is taken only on an as needed basis, once a migraine headache has begun, it is unlikely that a dosage can be missed. However, if the first dose does not relieve symptoms, do not take a second dose until at least two hours have passed. Do not take more than two doses in a twenty-four hour period.

What happens if I overdose on Treximet?

If an overdose of the Treximet drug has been taken, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has lost consciousness or stopped breathing, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Before taking Treximet, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to sumatriptan, naproxen, or any of the ingredients in the Treximet tablet

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any medications (both prescription and non-prescription), vitamins, or nutritional supplements

What are the possible side effects of taking Treximet?

Some who have taken Treximet have reported a range of side effects of varying degrees of severity. Less severe side effects include constipation, nausea, drowsiness, tight muscles, dizziness, flushing of the face, or a feeling of heaviness in parts of the body.

Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include bloody or tarry stools, coughing or vomiting blood, pain in the upper stomach, symptoms of an allergic reaction, changes in urine color, symptoms of jaundice, sudden vision changes, slurred speech, loss of balance, chest pain, sudden weight gain, seizures or convulsions, tachycardia, arrhythmia, or fainting. This list is not exhaustive; if any unusual symptoms are experienced while taking Treximet, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
