About Temodar

What is Temodar?

Temodar, the chemotherapy drug temozolomide, is an antineoplastic alkylating agent prescribed in conjunction with radiation therapy to treat certain types of brain tumors. It interferes with the development of cancer cells to stop or slow their growth and spread through the body.

How do I take Temodar?

Temodar is administered as a capsule and is taken orally once a day, with water, on an empty stomach. The dosage strength and length of treatment will be determined by your doctor. Follow dosing instructions exactly and do not increase or decrease the dosage without medical permission. Do not handle damaged or broken capsules with bare hands, and always wash your hands after taking a capsule. Do not crush, break, chew, or inhale this medication. If you do not understand any aspect of this medication, its use, or its potential risks, ask your doctor for Temodar patient assistance.

What if I forget to take a dose of Temodar?

Talk with your doctor about the proper procedure in the event you forget to take your scheduled dose of Temodar. Do not increase the number of capsules taken or alter the dosing regimen to make up for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Temodar?

If an overdose of Temodar is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose may include coughing or vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds, signs of an allergic reaction or an infection; dark brown, red, or pink urine; red, black, or tarry stools; or unusual bleeding or bruising.

Before taking Temodar, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to temozolomide, dacarbazine or any of the ingredients in the Temodar drug

  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements, especially carbamazepine, phenytoin, co-trimoxazole, steroids, or valproic acid

  • You have liver or kidney disease

What are the possible side effects of taking Temodar?

Less severe side effects of Temodar may include loss of appetite, balance or coordination problems, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, fainting, hair loss, headache, insomnia, lack of energy, memory problems, mouth or throat sores, nausea, pale skin, and vision changes. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor. Rare but severe side effects may include coughing or vomiting blood or material that looks like coffee grounds; decreased urination or changes in urine color; signs of an infection; pain in the upper right part of the stomach; red, black or tarry stools; seizures; shortness of breath; inability to move one side of the body; unusual bleeding or bruising; unusual fatigue or weakness; vomiting; or symptoms of jaundice or liver disease. If you have any of these side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

How do I store Temodar?

Keep Temodar tightly sealed in a dry space in its original container, out of the reach of children and pets. Ask your pharmacist about the proper procedure for disposing of unused or expired doses of this medication; do not flush this medication down the toilet, wash it down the sink, or put it in the trash.

Warnings

Do not handle broken capsules of Temodar with bare hands; do not inhale this medication or any dust it may generate if a capsule is broken. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this drug. Do not breastfeed while taking this medication. Use a reliable form of birth control to prevent a pregnancy or fathering a child while taking Temodar. This medication may cause vomiting; notify your doctor immediately if this happens and do not take another dose until your doctor instructs you to.
