What is Symbyax?

Symbyax is a combination of the antidepressant fluoxetine and the antipsychotic medication olanzapine; it is prescribed to treat depression resulting from bipolar disorder as well as treatment-resistant depression. Fluoxetine is an SSRI that works by increasing serotonin levels; olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic that changes certain natural substances in the brain.

How do I take Symbyax?

Symbyax is dispensed as a capsule that is taken orally once a day with water. The actual dosing frequency, however, will depend on the strength prescribed, the condition being treated, and the medical profile of the patient. Swallow the entire capsule; do not crush, split, break, or chew it. Do not stop taking Symbyax without first notifying your doctor.

What if I forget to take a dose of Symbyax?

If you forget to take your scheduled dose of the Symbyax drug, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, if it is almost time for the next one, skip the missed dose and return to the original schedule. Mild side effects may include breast enlargement or discharge, diminished sex drive or ability, constipation, depression, sleep difficulties, difficulty walking, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, excessive sweating, late or missed menstrual periods, appetite loss, nausea, nervousness, pain in arms, legs, back, or joints, restlessness, sore throat, tremors, unusual behavior, weakness, and weight gain or loss. If any of these appear and persist or worsen, contact your doctor for Symbyax patient assistance. Some severe side effects that necessitate an immediate medical response include suicidal thoughts and behaviors, fever, joint pain, confusion, tachycardia, arrhythmia, severe muscle stiffness, visual and aural hallucinations, or seizures.

How do I store Symbyax?

Keep Symbyax capsules tightly sealed in their original container, out of the reach of children and away from heat, moisture, and light. Talk with your pharmacist about the proper method for disposing of any expired or unused capsules.

Warnings

Do not take Symbyax if you are pregnant; contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking it.
