About Sodium Bicarbonate

What is sodium bicarbonate?

Sodium bicarbonate is a generic antacid better known as baking soda. The oral versions of this medication are used to relieve heart burn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach due to stomach acids, as well as assisting the treatment of ulcers. Sodium bicarbonate is also used as an additive to injections to neutralize their PH levels before administration.

How do I take sodium bicarbonate?

You should always take this medication as instructed by your doctor, pharmacist, or the instructions on the medicine label. Depending on what's being treated, you may need to take a dose as many as 4 times daily, often for a max of 2 weeks. Sodium bicarbonate pills should be taken with a full glass (8oz) of water. Effervescent tablets and powder should be dissolved in water according to your dose. Use a special dose measuring spoon or cup to measure out sodium bicarbonate powder.

What if I forget to take a dose of sodium bicarbonate?

Taking this medication is often on an as needed basis, ergo you will not have a scheduled dose to miss.

If your doctor does have you on a regimented schedule, you may take your missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Never take extra medication.

What happens if I overdose on sodium bicarbonate?

If you suspect overdose, call your local poison control center.

Before taking sodium bicarbonate, tell your doctor if:

  • You have or have a history of kidney or liver disease or disorder.

  • You have or have a history of diabetes.

  • You have or have a history of heart disease or disorder, including high blood pressure.

  • You are currently on a low salt (i.e., low sodium) diet.

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed.

  • You are taking any other prescribed or non-prescribed drugs, medications, supplements or vitamins, especially other antacids, NSAIDs such as aspirin, benzodiazepines, lithium or time sensitive medications. This is not a complete list of substances which may interact with sodium bicarbonate.

  • You have or have recently had a gastrointestinal problem with bleeding in the stomach or intestine.

What are the possible side effects of taking sodium bicarbonate?

The following side effects require immediate emergency medical attention: shortness of breath or difficulty breathing (even with mild exertion), hives and itching, general body swelling, swelling in the face or lips, swelling in the tongue or throat, rapid weight gain, severe headache, severe stomach pain, black or tar-colored stool, blood in your urine or stool, nausea or vomiting that looks like coffee grounds.

Some side effects only need your doctor's attention if they persist or get worse. These include: increased thirst, urinating more than usual, dry mouth, gas, mild stomach cramping.

How do I store sodium bicarbonate?

Store this medication tightly sealed in its original container at room temperature and away from moisture, light and heat (e.g., a bathroom). Do not freeze liquid versions.

Warnings

There are a number of antacids or medications that include sodium bicarbonate. Always ensure you are picking up the correct medication. This medication is not intended for children under the age of 12.

Sodium bicarbonate will raise your sodium levels. If you have a sodium-restricted diet, talk to your doctor about whether this medication is right for you.

Do not take sodium bicarbonate within 2 hours of taking another oral medication, as it may reduce that medication's efficacy. You should avoid taking this medication with other drugs unless instructed to do so by your doctor.

Brand Names

Be careful - sodium bicarbonate can be found in numerous combination medications (e.g., Zegerid, aka omeprazole with sodium bicarbonate). Be sure you're buying the correct medication as indicated by your doctor. Some brands for sodium bicarbonate pills, effervescent tablets, or injectable solution include Alka-Seltzer Heart Burn, Neut, or Brioschi. As the generic, the sodium bicarbonate price is already lower.
