About Rytary

What is Rytary?

Rytary is an extended-release combination capsule containing carbidopa and levodopa. These two drugs are commonly used together to treat the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative condition that may be caused by low levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine. Carbidopa helps keep levodopa from breaking down before it reaches the brain, and levodopa is converted into dopamine in the brain. This may reduce Parkinson’s symptoms such as tremors and muscle stiffness.

How do I take Rytary?

Take the Rytary drug with or without food only as often as your doctor has told you to (usually three times a day). Take each dose at regular intervals so that the level of medicine remains consistent in your body, and do not chew or break open the Rytary capsules, as this will cause the medicine to be released too soon. Do not stop using this medication without consulting your doctor; stopping abruptly may cause withdrawal symptoms.

What if I forget to take a dose of Rytary?

It’s important to take Rytary on a regular schedule; always refill your prescription before you run out of medication. If you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosage schedule.

What happens if I overdose on Rytary?

Overdosing on the Rytary drug may cause uncontrollable muscle movements, psychosis, and an irregular heartbeat. Go to the nearest emergency room or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 if you or anyone in your household is exhibiting symptoms of an overdose.

Before taking Rytary, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to carbidopa or levodopa, or you have any other allergies

  • You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medications or supplements

  • You have used an MAO inhibitor in the last 14 days

  • You have glaucoma

  • You have kidney or liver disease

  • You have high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease

  • You have a breathing disorder (e.g. asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)

  • You have a hormonal disorder

  • You have an intestinal or stomach ulcer

  • You have a personal or family history of depression or any other mental illness

  • You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or trying to become pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Rytary?

The most common side effects of Rytary are dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, difficulty sleeping, unusual dreams, constipation, involuntary muscle movement, and anxiety. If you have any side effects that last a long time or are bothersome, let your healthcare provider know. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following rare but serious side effects: uncontrolled facial muscle movements, severe vomiting or diarrhea, unusual mood or behavior changes, suicidal thoughts, muscle rigidity, irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, fever, or excessive sweating. You should also contact your doctor promptly if you experience worsening Parkinson’s symptoms.

How do I store Rytary?

Store Rytary in a tightly sealed container at room temperature (77 degrees Fahrenheit). Protect it from moisture and light, and keep it out of reach of any pets or children in your home. If you are no longer taking this drug but have leftover capsules, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of them.

Warnings

If you are currently taking levodopa on its own, stop taking it at least 12 hours before you start using Rytary. Do not take iron supplements or eat a high-protein diet while taking Rytary, since this can make it harder for your body to absorb the medicine. Be careful driving or performing other tasks that require alertness until you know how the medication affects you; Rytary has caused a small number of people to fall asleep while performing daily activities.
