About Quinapril HCL

What is quinapril?

Quinapril is classified as an ACE inhibitor (angiotensin converting enzyme) and is prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. It lowers blood pressure and increases blood supplies to the heart by lowering certain chemicals found in the body that cause the blood vessels to constrict. It may also be used in combination with other medications in the treatment of heart failure.

How do I take quinapril?

Quinapril or quinapril hcl (quinapril hydrochloride) are administered in tablet form and taken orally twice a day with water. Take quinapril exactly as directed and do not increase or decrease the dosage without your doctor’s permission. Taking it at the same time every day is not required, but it does make it easier to remember. You doctor may also make adjustments to your diet, so it is important to adhere to these changes. Because quinapril does not cure high blood pressure, it only controls it, you must continue taking it, even if you are feeling well.

What if I forget to take a dose of quinapril?

If you forget to take your scheduled dos of quinapril, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to time for the next dose, forego the one you missed and take the next dose at its regular time. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

What happens if I overdose on quinapril?

If an overdose of quinapril occurs, call poison control immediately at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual is not breathing or has collapsed, call emergency services at 911. Signs of an overdose include lightheadedness and/or fainting.

Before taking quinapril, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are nursing;

  • You have asthma.

  • You are allergic to quinapril or any of the following: fosinopril, enalapril, perindopril, moexipril, captopril, benazepril, lisinopril, ramipril, or trandolapril

  • You are taking any vitamins or supplements or herbal products;

  • You are taking any diuretics;

  • You have lupus, heart disease, diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease, angioedema and all other illness or diseases;

  • You are using salt substitutes that contain potassium.

What are the possible side effects of taking quinapril?

Quinapril can have numerous side effects, and it is important that you inform your doctor if you experience any of them. Side effects include lightheadedness or dizziness, nausea, vomiting, excessive fatigue, yellowing of the eyes, difficulty in breathing or swallowing, hoarseness, and chest pain. Quinapril can also cause anaphylaxis in some patients, a life-threatening allergic reaction. This list is not exhaustive, and if you begin experiencing anything unusual, please contact your physician immediately.

How do I store quinapril?

Keep quinapril in its original container and out of the reach of children. Store it at room temperature in a dry location away from the extremes of heat and humidity. Dispose of unused or expired tablets according to the recommendations of your pharmacist.

Warnings

Because quinapril, and other medications that target the angiotensin-renin system, can harm a fetus, take strong precautions against pregnancy. If you become pregnant, notify your doctor immediately. Make sure any doctor or dentist who treats you knows that you are taking quinapril. Do not take other medications without first discussing them with your doctor, this includes NSAIDS and other over-the-counter medications and supplements.

This medication may have limited effectiveness for those of African ancestry. These individuals may also have an increased risk of swelling of the throat, mouth, lips, face, arms, and hands.

Brand Names

Quinapril HCL is marketed under the brand name Accupril, and while this can have an impact on cost, the prices for this, and the generic quinapril hydrochloride, can be reduced by using our discount program or discount cards.
