About Propofol

What is propofol?

Propofol is classified as a hypnotic and amnestic medication. It is primarily used for anesthesia and sedation before medical procedures in both humans and animals. Propofol has mostly replaced the use of Pentothal for anesthesia because the after effects tend to be less severe and the patient feels less groggy. The propofol drug was brought to the attention of the general public in recent years after Michael Jackson was pronounced dead from an overdose of this medication. Propofol works similarly to benzodiazepines by acting on GABA receptors, causing the central nervous system to slow down and relax. It’s possible that propofol also acts on the endocannabinoid system in the brain.

How do I take propofol?

Propofol should only be administered in a hospital or doctor’s office by a trained medical professional where vital signs will be monitored. Propofol will be administered intravenously and sedation will be achieved within seconds.

What happens if I overdose on propofol?

This is not likely if you are in a hospital or doctor’s office and under the care of an anesthesiologist. Doctors will monitor your vital signs and know when too much medication is administered. Do not use this medication outside of a medical facility.

Before taking propofol, tell your doctor if:

  • You have liver or kidney disease.

  • You have epilepsy or seizures.

  • You are taking any kind of medications, especially barbiturates, sleeping pills, anxiety medications, narcotics or pain killers, and cough medicines.

What are the possible side effects of taking propofol?

Propofol side effects include nausea, pain at the site of injection, cough, shallow breathing and slowed heart rate, confusion, agitation, numbness or tingling sensation, apnea, and priapism. Your doctors and anesthesiologist will be there to attend to any adverse effects.

Warnings

Be sure your doctor and anesthesiologist know about all the medications you are taking before you are sedated or put under for surgery or another procedure with propofol. Any other medications that slow the central nervous system can be dangerous when mixed with propofol.
