About Pacerone

What is Pacerone?

Pacerone is a brand-name medication containing amiodarone, an antiarrhythmic drug used to treat irregular heartbeat, particularly ventricular arrhythmias. It may also sometimes be used to treat atrial fibrillation. This medication is normally only used to treat patients who are suffering from life-threatening conditions. Amiodarone works by prolonging phase 3 of the cardiac action potential, the repolarization phase, making the heartbeat more regular. This medication is both an alpha and beta blocker.

How do I take Pacerone?

The dosage of Pacerone depends solely on the individual’s condition and the discretion of the physician. In many cases, Pacerone medication is given in large doses for 1-3 weeks in a hospital under the constant supervision of a medical staff. Then, the patient is released under maintenance therapy in smaller doses. Pacerone comes in the form of a tablet to be taken orally. If you are taking Pacerone at home, your doctor will likely prescribe one or two doses daily. Due to the serious side effects this medication may cause, follow your doctor’s instructions exactly. Your doctor will monitor you for side effects and regularly test the efficacy of the medication. Avoid exposure to sunlight and sun lamps while undergoing treatment with Pacerone, and do not drink grapefruit juice. It is advisable to carry an ID card or bracelet with you at all times that indicates your treatment with Pacerone.

What if I forget to take a dose of Pacerone?

If you miss a dose of Pacerone, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of Pacerone to compensate for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Pacerone?

Signs of overdose on Pacerone include nausea, blurred vision, fainting, and a slow heartbeat. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Pacerone, call 911 or go to the emergency room. Pacerone overdose can be fatal.
