The active ingredient in the prescription drug Ovidrel is a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). HCG may be used to increase fertility in women or to promote the production of testosterone in men. Unfortunately, the Ovidrel price can be high. The cost for one Ovidrel syringe is typically around $180, although prices vary somewhat by location. About Ovidrel

What is Ovidrel?

Ovidrel may be used alongside other fertility drugs to help women conceive. It acts similarly to luteinizing hormone (LH) and helps promote ovulation. It may also be prescribed to men or adolescents to stimulate the testes to promote more testosterone, or to young boys who have a pituitary gland problem that has prevented their testicles from dropping into their scrotum.

How do I take Ovidrel?

Ovidrel is administered via an injection under the skin. If you will be administering the injection at home, your healthcare provider should give you instructions on how to do so safely. Always wash your hands and clean the injection site with rubbing alcohol before using this medication. Keep all scheduled appointments with your doctor, as she or he will need to make sure the drug is working.

What if I forget to take a dose of Ovidrel?

It is important that you use Ovidrel on the schedule that your doctor has prescribed. If you forget a dose, call your doctor to set up a new dosing schedule.

What happens if I overdose on Ovidrel?

It is unlikely that you will experience serious adverse effects from an overdose of Ovidrel, but if you believe that you or someone in your household has used too much of this medication, get emergency medical help or call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Before taking Ovidrel, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to this or any other medications

  • You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements

  • You have gone through early puberty

  • You have unexplained vaginal bleeding

  • You have primary ovarian failure

  • You have uterus problems

  • You have a thyroid or adrenal gland disorder

  • You had had cancer of the uterus, ovary, breast, or prostate

  • You have heart disease

  • You have a history of blood clots or stroke

  • You have any lung or breathing problems, such as asthma

  • You have liver or kidney disease

  • You have epilepsy

  • You have chronic migraines

  • You are breastfeeding or think you may be pregnant

What are the possible side effects of taking Ovidrel?

Some of the most common side effects of Ovidrel include irritation at the injection site, mild bloating, breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting, or headache. Contact your doctor right away if you have a rare but serious side effect such as unexplained vaginal bleeding, numbness or tingling in an arm or leg, severe dizziness, confusion, slurred speech, or sudden vision changes. Very rarely, Ovidrel can cause a severe form of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in women. Get emergency medical attention if you have any side effects of this condition, which may include severe abdominal or pelvic pain, severe nausea or vomiting, unexplained weight gain, decrease in urine, or shortness of breath. In young boys, Ovidrel may cause early puberty. Contact your doctor if your child is taking this medication and experiences pubic hair growth, a deepened voice, or an increase in acne.

How do I store Ovidrel?

Keep unopened vials of Ovidrel in a dark space at room temperature, and keep prefilled syringes in the refrigerator. If you notice that the liquid in the vials or syringes has changed colors or has particles floating in it, do not use it. If you are using a form of Ovidrel that comes as a powder to be mixed with a liquid, keep the powder at room temperature and away from light and moisture. Once you have mixed the powder and liquid, you must use the medication immediately. After you are done using a disposable syringe, throw the needle away in a puncture-proof container, and keep the container out of reach of children and pets. If you have questions about where to find a puncture-proof container or how to safely dispose of unused medication, contact your pharmacist.

Warnings

As a fertility drug, Ovidrel increases the likelihood of multiple births (e.g. twins, triplets). If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant while using Ovidrel, stop using the medication immediately and contact your doctor.

Brand Names

Ovidrel is a brand name drug, and at this time, there is no FDA-approved generic equivalent. There are, however, several other brand name medications containing human chorionic gonadotropin, including Pregnyl and Novarel. If you need one of these drugs or any other fertility medication that isn’t covered by your insurance, lower your out-of-pocket expense with a free coupon or discount card from FamilyWize.
