About Niacin

What is Niacin?

Niacin is a generic, B-complex vitamin that is available with or without a prescription. Niacin is used with diet changes to reduce the low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad” cholesterol, levels, and the levels of other fatty substances in the blood, and to increase the amount of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or ''good cholesterol'', in the blood. It may also be used to decrease the risk of heart attack in patients with high cholesterol who have had a heart attack. It may also be used to reduce the levels of triglycerides in patients who are at risk for developing pancreatic disease.

How do I use Niacin?

Niacin is available as a tablet and as an extended-release (long-acting) tablet to be taken orally. Follow your doctor’s instructions and/or the instructions on the packaging for using this drug. If you are taking the extended-release tablet, be sure to swallow it whole. Do not crush, split, or chew the extended-release tablet.

What if I forget to use a dose of Niacin?
