Meprobamate is a generic tranquilizer and it comes in tablet and extended-release capsule form. This drug is used to relieve symptoms of anxiety on a short-term basis. It is also used to treat anxiety disorders. This drug works by slowing down activity in the brain to promote relaxation.

How do I use Meprobamate?

Meprobamate tablets and extended-release capsules are to be taken orally, and this drug is typically prescribed to be taken 2 to 4 times per day. If you are taking the extended-release capsules, swallow them whole. Do not chew, split, or crush the extended-release capsules, as doing so may cause the medication to release in your body all at once.

Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully for using this medication. This medication can be addictive. Do not take more of this medication than has been prescribed to you.

What if I forget to use a dose of Meprobamate?

Do not take a missed dose of Meprobamate. Skip the dose completely, then continue to take this drug as scheduled. Do not take 2 doses of Meprobamate at one time.

What happens if I overdose on Meprobamate?

In case of overdose, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do, or seek immediate medical attention.

Before using Meprobamate, tell your doctor if:

  • you are allergic to Meprobamate or any other medications

  • you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding

  • you have or have ever had kidney or liver disease

  • You have a history of alcohol or drug abuse

  • You have or have ever had porphyria or epilepsy

  • If you are having surgery, tell your doctor you are taking this medication.

  • If you are 65 years of age or older, talk to your doctor about the risks involved with taking this medication, as this drug is not as safe to take as other drugs that are available to treat the same condition.

  • Meprobamate may cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery while using this medication until you know how it affects you.

  • Avoid drinking alcohol while using Meprobamate, as alcohol may worsen the drowsiness side effect of this medication.
