About Lithium Carbonate

What is lithium carbonate?

Lithium carbonate and lithium carbonate ER are mood stabilizing drugs that have been used since the 19th century. Lithium was originally used to treat gout, and theories started to develop around its efficacy in treating mania and depression. Today lithium is a first line treatment for mania and is used to treat bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and even schizophrenia. Lithium is different from other antidepressants in that it decreases the risk of suicide. Some countries have even considered adding small amounts to their water supply for this reason. The way that lithium works to stabilize mood is still unknown, but it is understood that lithium alters sodium transport in nerve and muscle cells and it also seems to raise levels of calming neurotransmitters like GABA while decreasing excitatory neurotransmitters like norepinephrine. Lithium’s functions in the body are thought to be complex, and its efficacy in treating mania has been proven through numerous trials and studies.

How do I take lithium carbonate?

Lithium carbonate comes as a tablet, capsule, solution, or extended release (ER) tablet to be taken orally. Your dose will depend on your condition. Follow instructions provided to you by your doctor. This medication is usually taken 2-3 times a day at regular intervals. Take your medication with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew or break the lithium carbonate ER tablets. This could destroy the extended release mechanism. Your doctor should monitor your blood lithium levels regularly while taking this medication to avoid lithium toxicity.

What if I forget to take a dose of lithium carbonate?

If you miss a dose of lithium carbonate, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take double doses of lithium to compensate for missed ones.

What happens if I overdose on lithium carbonate?

Signs of overdose on lithium carbonate include diarrhea, vomiting, drowsiness, weakness, blurred vision, loss of coordination, increased urination, and even a feeling of giddiness. If you or someone you know has overdosed on lithium, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim is unresponsive, call 911.

Before taking lithium carbonate, tell your doctor if:

  • You have any heart or kidney problems.

  • You have low levels of sodium.

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • You have any other mental conditions or a brain syndrome.

  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription drugs, vitamins or supplements, including diuretics, blood pressure medications, other medications for depression or mental illness, NSAIDs, seizure medications, theophylline, and metronidazole.

What are the possible side effects of taking lithium carbonate?

Possible side effects from taking lithium carbonate include nausea, hand tremors, dry mouth, dry skin or hair, and frequent urination. These side effects often fade after initial treatment. Talk to your doctor if these side effects are severe or persistent. Severe side effects include diarrhea, vomiting, drowsiness, weakness, blurred vision, and lack of coordination. These could be signs of lithium toxicity. Contact your doctor at once if you experience any of these severe side effects.
