About Labetalol HCL

What is labetalol hcl?

Labetalol hydrochloride is an adrenergic receptor blocker and works by blocking alpha and beta receptors, relaxing blood vessels to slow heart rates. By relaxing blood vessels and slowing heart rate, labetalol hydrochloride improves blood flow and decreases blood pressure. Either used alone or in combinations with other medications, labetalol hcl affects the responses to nerve impulses in the body, allowing the heart to beat slower and reduce blood pressure and, in turn, increasing the amount of blood and oxygen to the heart. Labetalol hcl has been shown to be an effective treatment for pregnant women in reducing and controlling pregnancy-induced hypertension commonly associated with pre-eclampsia.

Labetalol hydrochloride may also be used to treat angina and tetanus.

How do I take labetalol hcl?

Labetalol hcl is a tablet form medication which is taken by mouth two to three times per day. While dosage must be individualized depending upon the individual circumstances and current health, the recommended initial dosage is 10mg twice daily. After two to three days, the dosage may be modified in increments of 100mg b.i.d. every two or three days, dependent upon the change in standing blood pressure. The typical maintenance dosage of labetalol hcl is between 200mg and 400mg twice daily. Titration increments should not exceed 200mg twice daily. Elderly patients may eliminate labetalol hydrochloride more slowly, resulting in adequate blood pressure control at a lower maintenance dosage relative to the general population.

What if I forget to take a dose of labetalol hcl?

If you miss a dose of labetalol hcl, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double dose.

Symptoms of overdose include fainting, seizures, severe dizziness or lightheadedness, shortness of breath, or slow heartbeat. Patients suffering overdose should be placed on their backs with their legs raised to improve the blood supply to the brain.
