About Keflex

What is Keflex?

Keflex (cephalexin) is an oral, semisynthetic antibiotic, specifically a semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic, which is different from penicillin-based antibiotics in chemical structure. It is prescribed to treat bacteria-borne illnesses, such as urinary tract, bone, ear, upper respiratory, and skin infections. Keflex works by stopping the growth of bacterial cell walls.

Please note: Keflex uses do not include treating viral or fungal infections.

How do I take Keflex?

Your doctor will determine your dose of Keflex, and thus how often you need to take your medication, based on your age and what illness is being treated. Generally, you will probably be prescribed 1 pill every 6 hours for a total of 4 times daily. Always swallow your pills whole with a full glass (8oz) of water, and do not crush or break your medication.

What if I forget to take a dose of Keflex?

Unless it's almost time for your next dose, take the missed dose of Keflex as soon as you remember it. Otherwise, skip the missed dose. Always maintain your dosing schedule and do not take extra medication or a double dose to make up for the missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Keflex?

Symptoms of overdose include: bloody urine, severe diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea and vomiting. If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical attention.

Before taking Keflex, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to any antibiotics or any of the ingredients in Keflex medicine.

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription medications, especially other antibiotics or blood thinners like Warafin.

  • You have colitis or a history of severe diarrhea from antibiotics.

  • You have kidney disease.

What are the possible side effects of taking Keflex?

Some Keflex side effects are quite severe and require emergency medical attention. These include: seizure, agitation or anxiety, confusion or unusual thoughts, severe diarrhea, hallucinations, unusually pale skin, jaundice, hives or itching, swelling in the face and lips, swelling in the tongue or throat, sore throat, fever with headache, red rash that peels and blisters, weakness, unusual bleeding or bruising, problems urinating, watery or bloody diarrhea.

Common Keflex side effects include: feeling tired, dizziness, joint pain, mild nausea and vomiting, mild diarrhea, vaginal itching or discharge.

How do I store Keflex?

Store this medication away from moisture and heat (e.g., a bathroom) at room temperature, and keep out of reach of children or pets.

Warnings

Keflex is not intended to treat fungal or viral infections and should not be taken for such. Taking an antibiotic without needing to increases the likelihood of infection by antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Always take your Keflex medicine for the full length of time as prescribed by your doctor and do not stop taking the medication even if you feel well. Symptoms may disappear before the infection is fully treated, and doing so will increase the risk of reactivating your illness, your illness getting worse, or developing an antibiotic resistant illness.

Be sure to drink plenty of water while taking this medication to keep from becoming dehydrated.

Brand Names

There is a generic available for Keflex - cephalexin. There used to be another brand available as well (Panixine Disperdose), however it is no longer on the market.
