About Hydrocodone/Homatropine

What is hydrocodone/homatropine?

Hydrocodone/homatropine is a combination of drugs used for temporary control of coughing. Hydrocodone is a narcotic antitussive that acts directly on the cough center to suppress the urge to cough. However, it is addictive if used for an extended period or if it is abuse. Homatropine is an anticholinergic, working to dry up secretions; it is also added as a preventative against overdosing on this medication.

How do I take hydrocodone/homatropine?

Hydrocodone homatropine is available as either a tablet or a syrup. Adults should take no more than 1 tablet or 1 teaspoon of this medication every four to six hours, or according to the doctor’s instructions. Children should not take more than a single half-tablet or a single half-teaspoon every four to six hours, or according to the doctor’s instructions. Take this medication with a full glass or water, and drink plenty of water through the day.

Take this medication at the same times every day in order to help develop and maintain a dosing schedule.

What if I forget to take a dose of hydrocodone/homatropine?

If you forget to take the scheduled dose of hydrocodone/homatropine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

What happens if I overdose on hydrocodone/homatropine?

If an overdose of hydrocodone/homatropine is suspected, call emergency services at 911 and Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Symptoms of an overdose include limp muscles, blue lips, clamminess, excessive drowsiness, a slowed heart rate, and/or slowed or stopped breathing.

Before taking hydrocodone/homatropine, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to hydrocodone, opioids, or any medications;

  • You have glaucoma;

  • You are pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant, or are nursing;

  • You have liver or kidney disease;

  • You have an underactive thyroid;

  • You have Addison’s disease;

  • You have urination problems or an enlarge prostate;

  • You have a history of alcoholism or drug addiction.

What are the possible side effects of taking hydrocodone/homatropine?

Several side effects may appear when taking hydrocodone/homatropine. Less serious effects include drowsiness, problems with concentration, constipation, nausea, or vomiting. Call your doctor if these symptoms persist or become severe.

Serious side effects with this medication are also possible. These include unusual thoughts or behavior, addiction, painful urination, reduction in frequency of urination, anxiety, fearfulness, extreme sleepiness or drowsiness, weak or shallow breathing, cessation of breathing, or rash. How do I store hydrocodone/homatropine?

Store hydrocodone/homatropine in its original packaging, and keep it out of the reach of children. It is also recommended that attention be paid to the number of tablets or the volume of syrup in the bottle in order to detect unauthorized use, as hydrocodone homatropine is known to be a drug of abuse.
