About Grastek

What is Grastek?

Grastek is a timothy grass pollen allergen extract used to treat allergies and symptoms caused by Timothy grass pollen. It is classified as a type of immunotherapy, and it is theorized that this medication works by slowing building up a patient’s tolerance to grass pollen. It will not relieve allergy symptoms that have already appeared.

How do I take Grastek?

Grastek is a sublingual medication in pill form, usually taken once a day, with treatment beginning at least twelve weeks before the onset of a grass pollen season. You will take your first dose of Grastek in the office of your healthcare provider where he or she can monitor for adverse reactions. Place the medication under your tongue and allow it to dissolve. Do not consume food or drink for at least five minutes after taking this medication as it may interfere with the amount of medication that is absorbed.

What if I forget to take a dose of Grastek?

If you forget to take your Grastek medication, do so as soon as you remember and are able. However, it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the normal dosing routine. Do not increase the number of doses or alter the dosing regimen to make up for one that was missed. If you miss more than one dose, contact your healthcare provider for instructions.

What happens if I overdose on Grastek?

If an overdose of Grastek is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue, difficulty breathing or swallowing, hives, rash, or intense itching.
