About Glumetza

What is Glumetza?

Glumetza (metformin extended release) is an oral biguanide used alone or with insulin and other medications to treat Type 2 Diabetes. It works by decreasing both the amount of glucose your body can absorb from food as well as the amount of glucose your liver produces. It can also increase your body's ability to utilize insulin.

How do I take Glumetza?

Always take this medication exactly as directed, and your dosages are determined by your blood-glucose level. This medication is usually taken as 1 pill by mouth with your evening meal every day. Do not crush, chew, or break your Glumetza pills.

What if I forget to take a dose of Glumetza?

Never take extra medication to make up for a missed dose of Glumetza. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Otherwise, you may take the dose as soon as you remember it.

What happens if I overdose on Glumetza?

Lactic acidosis may occur with Glumetza overdose, which may be deadly. Seek emergency medical assistance immediately if you experience: light-headedness, fainting, increasing sleepiness, feeling cold, feeling weak, slow heart rate, muscle pain, pinching feeling in the stomach, or shortness of breath.

Other symptoms of overdose include: nausea and vomiting, decreased appetite, abnormal heart beat, flushed skin, rapid but deep breathing.

Before taking Glumetza, tell your doctor if:

• You have Type 1 diabetes. • You have had severe side effects or an allergic reaction to other forms of metformin. • You are taking any other drugs or supplements, including diuretics, steroids, oral contraceptives, seizure medications, anti-angina or anti-hypertension medicines, certain antacids, morphine, some heart disorder medications, and antibiotics. • You need a CT-scan or X-ray. • You have recently had surgery or about to have surgery. • You have or have a history of heart, kidney, or liver disease or disorder. • You will be unable to take the medication with meals for any reason. • You are pregnant or breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant or to breastfeed. • You are under large amounts of stress. • You drink alcohol regularly or you are an alcoholic.

What are the possible side effects of taking Glumetza?

Lactic acidosis may be a side effect of Glumetza. Seek immediate emergency medical assistance, as this can be fatal.

Severe side effects may also require medical attention. These include: allergic reaction (hives, swelling in face, lips, tongue, throat), numb feeling in your arms or legs, being short of breath even after only mild exertion, rapid weight gain, swelling, flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, body aches).

Common side effects include: headache, mild muscle pain, mild nausea and vomiting, gas or stomach pain, diarrhea.

How do I store Glumetza?

Keep this medication at room temperature away from excess heat and moisture, as well as out of light.
