About Geodon

What is Geodon?

Geodon medication is prescribed for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, mania, depression, and other psychotic disorders. Geodon uses do not include treating dementia in adults sixty-five or older. It belongs to the atypical antipsychotic category of medications and works by restoring the balance of dopamine and serotonin in the brain in order to improve behavior, mood, and thinking.

How do I take Geodon?

Geodon is a prescription-only medication that is usually taken twice a day, with or without food. It is recommended that it be taken at the same time every day in order to develop a routine. Eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking the Geodon medication is not recommended.

What if I forget to take a dose of Geodon?

If you forget to take your regularly scheduled dose of Geodon, take the missed dose as soon as you remember and are able. However, if the time is near for the next dose, forego the missed one, and resume the normal dosing schedule. Do not take multiple doses of Geodon to make up for one missed.

What happens if I overdose on Geodon?

If an overdose of the Geodon medication is suspected, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing, lapsed into unconsciousness, or is noticeably drowsy or sleepy, has slurred speech, bodily tremors or tics, or has a high level of anxiety, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Before taking Geodon, tell your doctor if:

  • You are allergic to ziprasidone or any of the ingredients in the Geodon capsule

  • You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • You are taking anti-malarial medications such as quinine or mefloquine

  • You are taking antibiotics

  • You are taking antidepressants such as amoxapine, doxepin, nortriptyline, or medications to treat a psychiatric disorder such as chlorpromazine, pimozide, or thioradazine

  • You are taking medications to treat cancer such as tamoxifen, epirubicin, or idarubicin

  • You have arrhytmia or are taking medications to treat arrhythmia

  • You have a blood cell or bone marrow disorder

  • You have or have had breast cancer

  • You have or have had a heart attack or stroke

  • You have, or have had, suicidal thoughts

  • You have diabetes

  • You have high triglycerides or cholesterol or triglycerides

  • You have liver or kidney disease

  • You have low levels of magnesium or potassium

  • You have Alzheimer’s or Parkinson's disease

  • You have, or have had seizures

  • You have epilepsy

  • You have questions regarding an understanding of what Geodon is

What are the possible side effects of taking Geodon?

Some people have reported side effects from taking this medication. Mild Geodon side effects include anxiety, constipation, cough, diarrhea, drowsiness, headache, appetite loss, muscle pain, restlessness, runny nose, sneezing, or weight gain. However, if any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Severe Geodon side effects requiring immediate medical attention include disorientation and confusion, arrhythmia or tachycardia, fever, headache, muscle stiffness, signs of an allergic reaction including hives, rash, itching, swelling of the lips, mouth, throat, tongue, face, or difficulty breathing or swallowing; facial tics; or a painful erection lasting more than four hours.

How do I store Geodon?

Keep Geodon tightly sealed in its original container away from extremes of heat and humidity and out of the reach of children. Dispose of any unused or expired doses of the Geodon medication according to the instructions of your pharmacist.

Warnings

Alcohol can exacerbate the side effects of this medication; do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or use power tools until you know how Geodon affects you. Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medication. Geodon may prevent proper cool down after heavy exercise. Geodon use may cause hyperglycemia, and may increase the risk of diabetes.
