About Fosrenol

What is Fosrenol?

Healthy kidneys remove unused vitamins and minerals such as phosphorus and other substances from the blood. Patients with late-stage kidney disease are unable to filter out these excess nutrients, and dialysis is only able to eliminate small amounts of phosphorus. This causes a build-up of phosphorus in the body which can be dangerous, causing increased parathyroid hormone and bone loss. Fosrenol prevents the body from absorbing phosphorus that is taken in through diet.

How do I take Fosrenol?

Fosrenol tablets or powder should be taken before meals to prevent the absorption of phosphate. Most patients take Fosrenol three times daily and are prescribed between 1500mg and 3000mg per day. Your doctor will prescribe the necessary amount based on your blood-phosphate level. Always follow your doctor’s dosing instructions. Fosrenol tablets should be crushed or chewed completely before swallowing. The powder may be mixed with applesauce or a similar food and swallowed immediately after mixing. Do not pre-mix the powder with food. Your doctor will mostly likely have you maintain a low-phosphorus diet.

What if I forget to take a dose of Fosrenol?

If you miss a dose of Fosrenol, take the missed dose with food as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular routine. Do not take a double dose of Fosrenol to try to compensate for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Fosrenol?

Signs of overdose on Fosrenol may include nausea, vomiting, headache and constipation. If you think you or someone you know has overdosed on Fosrenol, call your doctor right away, or call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Before taking Fosrenol, tell your doctor if:

  • You have a history of bowel or colon cancer.

  • You have a bowel blockage.

  • You have stomach ulcers, Crohn’s disease or another gastrointestinal condition.

  • You have severe constipation

  • You are taking other prescription or nonprescription drugs, including antacids, thyroid medications and antibiotics.

  • You are taking vitamins or herbal supplements. Your supplements may contain phosphorus.

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Fosrenol medication.

What are the possible side effects of taking Fosrenol?

Fosrenol drug side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain. If any of these side effects are severe or persistent, tell your doctor immediately. Serious but rare side effects include negative mood changes, muscle weakness, bloating, constipation and severe abdominal pain. Report any serious side effects to your doctor as soon as possible.
