About Formaldehyde

What is formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde is a chemical derived from methanol. Formaldehyde is most commonly known as an embalming fluid, but other uses of formaldehyde include the treatment of warts or excessively sweaty feet. As a prescription drug, formaldehyde acts as a drying agent on the skin. It helps to dry warts before and after surgical removal and to stop excessive sweating. Your doctor may also prescribe topical formaldehyde for other purposes.

How do I take formaldehyde?

Test an area of your skin with a small amount of formaldehyde solution to check for sensitivity or allergic reaction. If your skin reacts, rinse the solution off immediately with soap and water and discontinue use. Contact your doctor for an alternative medication. As a prescription drug, formaldehyde is usually formulated into a solution that goes in a bottle with a roll-on applicator. Roll the formaldehyde solution onto your skin in the affected areas and follow your doctor’s instructions carefully. How often you use formaldehyde will depend on the condition you are treating.

What if I forget to take a dose of formaldehyde?

If you miss a formaldehyde application, apply the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it’s almost time for your next application, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not use double doses of formaldehyde to make up for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on formaldehyde?

Excessive use of formaldehyde will cause skin irritation. If formaldehyde is accidently swallowed, contact the Poison Control Center immediately at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the emergency room.

Before taking formaldehyde, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • You are allergic to formaldehyde of any of the ingredients in your medication.

  • Your skin is often sensitive to products or chemicals.

  • You have any other skin problems in the area where you will be applying formaldehyde solution.

What are the possible side effects of taking formaldehyde?

Possible side effects from using formaldehyde include redness or irritation at the site of application and allergic reaction. It may also cause the skin to harden.

How do I store formaldehyde?

Keep formaldehyde solution tightly closed in its original container. Keep this medication at room temperature and out of reach of children and pets.
