About Fenofibrate

What is fenofibrate?

Fenofibrate is a cholesterol-lowing medication that comes from the fibrate class of drugs. It lowers bad VLDL cholesterol that is produced in the liver and then converted to LDL cholesterol, and it reduces triglycerides in the blood while slightly raising good cholesterol levels (HDL). It works by increasing lipolysis, the breakdown of lipids, and eliminates triglycerides from blood plasma. Basically, this medication helps to ramp up the body’s natural process of eliminating cholesterol and triglycerides. This may help to prevent or unblock clogged arteries. Fenofibrate is often prescribed along with a statin cholesterol-lowering medication such as atorvastatin to further reduce LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol. The combined use of fibrates and statins will result in lower LDL and VLDL levels as well as raised HDL levels, but will also raise the risk of side effects. Fenofibrate is to be used along with a plan of diet and exercise to reduce bad cholesterol levels and improve the overall health of the patient.
