About Emend

What is Emend?

Emend is a brand of antiemetic (anti-nausea) medication. It contains the active ingredient aprepitant. Aprepitant is an NK1 receptor antagonist that works by reducing the urge to vomit by blocking the signals from NK1 receptors in the brain. It can also potentiate other antiemetic medications such as ondansetron and dexamethasone.

How do I take Emend?

Emend capsules may be taken with or without food and are usually prescribed in threes. They are taken once daily for three or four days in a row, depending on the severity of the chemotherapy. The first Emend capsule should be taken prior to surgery or chemotherapy. Follow your doctor’s instructions for your particular situation. You will be prescribed a combination of 40mg, 80mg and 125mg doses. The first dose is usually the largest. This medication may sometimes be prescribed along with other antiemetic drugs.

What if I forget to take a dose of Emend?

If only an hour or two has passed since you missed your dose, take the missed dose and continue on your prescribed regimen. If more time has passed, tell your doctor so he or she can establish a new schedule. The timing of this medication is essential to efficacy. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on Emend?

There are no reports of severe effects from Emend overdose. Symptoms of overdose include drowsiness and headache. If you or someone else has overdosed on Emend, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Before taking Emend, tell your doctor if:

  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, vitamins or supplements, especially blood thinners, antifungal medications, benzodiazepines, HIV medications, steroids, birth control pills, diltiazem, and any other chemotherapy medications the prescribing physician may not be aware of.

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • You have liver disease.

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication.

What are the possible side effects of taking Emend?

Possible drug side effects from Emend include hiccups, heartburn, and fatigue or drowsiness. If any of these side effects are severe, report them to your doctor. Serious side effects may include fever, chills, body aches, feeling hot and thirsty, perspiration and inability to urinate. If you experience any serious or unusual side effects, tell your doctor immediately.

How do I store Emend?

Store Emend in its original packaging at a temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep this medication out of reach of children and pets.

Warnings

Emend is used only to prevent nausea and vomiting. It may not be effective once these symptoms have begun. Tell your doctor if you miss a dose.

Brand Names

Emend is a brand-name drug and there are currently no other brands or generics available. There are no other drugs on the market that are NK1 receptor antagonists. This keeps the cost of Emend high. Use our coupons to get up to 75% off the pharmacy price.
