About Clotrimazole

What is clotrimazole?

Clotrimazole is an antifungal medication that is used to treat a variety of fungal infections from yeast infections to ringworm and athlete’s foot. It works by inhibiting the production of some enzymes that comprise the fungal cell wall, thereby increasing the permeability of the cell walls to cause leakage of the cell’s contents. Clotrimazole is often used in combination with betamethasone in some products to treat cutaneous fungal infections. In addition to cream and other topical medications, clotrimazole comes as a lozenge to treat fungal infections of the mouth.

How do I take clotrimazole?

You can buy clotrimazole as a cream, lotion, lozenge, or a topical solution. The lozenges are usually used five times daily, but follow instructions given by your doctor to treat your condition. They should be slowly dissolved in the mouth over a period of about thirty minutes. Do not chew or swallow the lozenges whole. If using the clotrimazole cream, lotion, or topical solution, wash and dry the affected area well before applying the medication. Then apply a layer of clotrimazole to the infection and thoroughly massage it into the skin. Wash your hands after each application. Wear lose-fitting clothing around the affected area until your infection has been cured. This medication is usually applied twice daily for two to four weeks depending on your type of infection.

Clotrimazole vaginal cream and tablets are used to treat yeast infections. This medication may be used once or twice daily for up to two weeks. Follow instructions provided by your doctor. This medication comes with an applicator for insertion. Wash your hands after each application. It is recommended to wear protective lining throughout the day as this medication will leak out over time.

What if I forget to take a dose of clotrimazole?

If you forget a dose or application of clotrimazole, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose or apply two consecutive doses of clotrimazole to make up for a missed dose.

What happens if I overdose on clotrimazole?

Signs of overdose or excessive use of clotrimazole include itching, stinging, peeling, blistering, burning, swelling, overall skin irritation, and possible cramping at the site of application.

Before taking clotrimazole, tell your doctor if:

  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding.

  • You are allergic to clotrimazole, other antifungals, or any of the other ingredients in this medication.

  • You are taking prescription or nonprescription medications or supplements, especially narcotic pain killers, budesonide, colchicine, halofantrine, tamsulosin, tolvaptan, antidepressants, antibiotics, drugs used to treat mental illness, and other antifungals.

What are the possible side effects of taking clotrimazole?

Possible side effects from taking clotrimazole vary depending on whether it is taken orally or topically. Topical side effects include burning, stinging, dryness, acne, and irritation at the site of application. Side effects from oral clotrimazole may include itching, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, upset stomach, or a strange sensation in the mouth. If you experience an allergic reaction, swelling, weight gain, increased thirst, severe irritation, mood changes, or increase urination, stop using this medication immediately and contact your doctor.

How do I store clotrimazole?

Store clotrimazole tightly closed in its container away from extreme temperatures and moisture. Do not allow this medication to freeze. Throw away any expired medication.
