What is Clarinex?

Clarinex is a medicine used to treat seasonal or year-round (perennial) allergies. It may also be used to treat chronic hives (urticaria). Clarinex contains an antihistamine drug called desloratadine. Desloratadine is a long-acting drug that can be effective for as many as 24 hours at a time. It works by inhibiting the release of histamine from mast cells which prevents allergy symptoms such as inflammation, sneezing, itching and nasal congestion.

How do I take Clarinex?

Clarinex medicine comes in the form of disintegrating tablets (RediTabs), regular tablets to be swallowed, or an oral solution. This medication is usually taken once daily. Before taking the disintegrating tablets, make sure your hands are dry. Place the tablet on the tongue and allow it to dissolve. This medication can be taken with or without food or water. Always follow your doctor’s instructions. Dose sizes vary by age and condition.

What if I forget to take a dose of Clarinex?

If you forget to take a dose of Clarinex, take the missed dose as soon as your remember, but if it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on your regular regimen. Do not take two consecutive doses to compensate for a missed one.

What happens if I overdose on Clarinex?

Signs of Clarinex drug overdose include sleepiness and possibly exaggerated side effects. If you or someone you know has overdosed on Clarinex, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Diarrhea, loss of appetite and fever may also occur in children. If any of these side effects are severe or don’t go away, report them to your doctor. Also, if you experience any serious or unusual side effects, call your doctor immediately.

How do I store Clarinex?

Store Clarinex in an airtight container or its original packaging. Protect this medication from light and moisture and store at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep your medication out of reach of children and pets.
