What is Cimetidine?

Cimetidine tablets are available without a prescription. This medication is an H2(histamine) blocker that is used to treat and prevent stomach ulcers and ulcers in the small intestine. It is also used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and inflammation of the esophagus that is caused by certain conditions, including acid reflux. In addition, Cimetidine may be used to treat heartburn caused by acid indigestion.

Histamine is a chemical in the body that promotes the release of acid into the stomach. This medication works by blocking the chemical histamine in the body to reduce the amount of acid in the stomach.

How do I use Cimetidine?

Take Cimetidine as indicated in the directions on the medication label.

  • This medication may be taken with or without food.

  • Avoid taking an antacid within 1 hour before or 1 hour after you take this medication.

What if I forget to use a dose of Cimetidine?

If you are taking Cimetidine regularly, take your missed dose of Cimetidine as soon as you remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
